Just wondering if there are compatibility issues with keeping two firefish together in the same 29g nano tank.

Aloha,
Not at all, though it can occasionally take some time for them to get along, in time they will hang together. Be sure to give them plenty of hiding room. Spreading some Chaeto and Caulerpa thickly and thinly around the lower rocks/rubble allows them to feel hidden in tiny tunnels. Getting two of slightly different size helps ensure that they may pair up. Some hobbyists will suggest using a netting over the tank but I have found no need for that. The one exception was when I put some in with Mr. Ray. One got spooked and went carpet surfing. The other ended up dead but not eaten. I might have a pic around here somewhere...

Open space for Mr. Ray to swim meant no hiding places for the Firefish.
Firefish tankmates:

That's my 2 cents.

From what I have read they will not tolerate each other unless they are a mated pair. YMMV.

I've had two of them - the trick I found was to make sure they hung out together in the same tank when you purchase them. Mine got along great.

i bought a purple firefish and liked him so i went to my lfs and asked them if i could put 2 more regular firefish with them and the told me they would be fine and not have any problems to i bought them and within a week of putting them in the tank one took a dive and the other i found dead on the bottom of the tank and both had torn up fins

Okay, it sounds like we need to make a list of the tried and true methods for making fish happy and friendly:
Allow the fishes natural food to grow in the tank for weeks or months prior (Macroalgae for herbivores; bugs for carnivores); Set up aquascaping with areas that closely approximate the fishes natural hiding places; Feed as much as the tank can handle for at least two days prior to introduction; Pick full bellied fish that are active and if multiples, are hanging out together; Politely thank the LFS for their advice, but check here to confirm the truth or call me right on the spot at the number below; Take multiple fish home in the same bag, where feasible; Use an acclimation container for several days or even a week (Be prepared not to release the fish if bad vibes or aggressive displays do not stop.); Remove the tough guy until after the new fish have made their home; and Train the fish to get along. You are the "Alpha".
I realize that some people think I am just plain crazy to suggest this fish training thing, but it really works. See the Reefkeeping Tip for a detailed explanation.

We have 3 now and 6 before my ich-pocalypse. They would all school together in a knot. We buy them all at the same time and they were all in the same tank at the LFS.
