it is solid now but leveling it was a b**ch.  I officially now know why most people complain about metal stands.  Dorks make them and do NOT make the legs level with each other.   It is level and solid now, but geeze!!!  back right leg was at least a 1/4 inch off from the rest of the legs so there was a real danger of the back corner breaking due to stress.  EVEN after the foam.    All the legs were varying levels so we ended up with all kinds of shims to get it level.

But it was stable, level before water, and still level after we put that much water in it, so it is good.  NOW he needs to plumb it up and do a sump.

Yeah bmac, mine required some fair amount of shims too. I think explaining this requirement to the builder is key. After I showed my friend (that built my stand) the setup. He apologized repeatedly for not having it exactly level. He simply didn't understand that it should be built to tight tolerances and he know of several things he'd do better to "make it great" but I was happy with it shimmed up. Next time...

I think one of the biggest things if you just HAVE to have a metal stand is this.  once it is built you put a sheet of mdf, or whatever you want on the top of the metal directly, then make SURE the board is totally level and shimmed right, THEN a nice piece of foam ( I like the 1/2 thing high pressure foam, usually blue in color),  Then put the tank and shim the bottom of the legs.  OR, have the builder put a flat piece of sheet metal and level out perfect and weld it to the top of the legs.  SOMETHING so it is not so flaky.  And whoever in the world was dumb enough to BOLT one of these together with bolts is insane.  Weld it all, weld it good.  NOT a fan of the bolt thing.

saying all of that, I will probably never have a metal stand.  I would have to see one built better than any I have seen to date to even think about it.

Well just a small update today... got my base floor in and painted, Ordered Acrylic for my sump... Tyler at http://www.elite-aquatics.net/" rel="nofollow - Elite Aquatics is awesome and said he would hook up a few cuts for me =) Also got a return pump from Eric from http://www.utahaquariumdoctors.com/" rel="nofollow - Aquarium Creations he hooked me up with a great deal on a Jebao DC 12000! Supposed to be dead silent and push near 3000gph

https://imageshack.com/i/0iro1zj" rel="nofollow">

I'm having a little bit of a hard time thinking about what to do with the canopy... Because I have can lights above the tank...
I could make the canopy a little lower profile around 12inches *The total clearance to the ceiling is 18 inches* but debating going to the ceiling because in my mind I'm going to basically have to stick my torso in the canopy to get to things in and out of this tank every once and a while, being that its so deep.. but not sure I want to mess with the ceiling lighting...

https://imageshack.com/i/0n5750j" rel="nofollow">

Also started working on my rock a bit today... its a bit hard to see in the pic, but started building a little tower. the plan on this tank is to keep all rock work under 18inches to allow for some good coral growth... also waiting for a few prime cuts (Flat cut on one side) from macro rock to finish out the rock work hopefully I can get those in by next week

I prefer an open top but if you want a canopy on that tank I think I would go to the ceiling so you have more room to get things in and out of the tank. You will need to figure a way to keep the canopy doors open (if they hinge on the top) so they stay out of your way.

These Action Plumbing manifolds are usually used for sprinkler valves and can be found at Sprinkler Supply or Sprinkler World, I'll use this one to feed a calcium reactor, a media reactor and a UV...

Got 95% of plumbing done today and got the tank filled!

Filling the tank up! You can also see how I did the plumbing a little better in this pic.

Ignore the rock work, this pic is just to show where the returns come in at.

The plumbings not in the way at all being that I already have a cross brace, I really like my returns near the front to aim back at the rock work.

Have my manifold mounted up high and will run  a few lines later on for a calcium reactor, possibly a carbon reactor and possibly UV. I wanted all my pipes out of the way so went high with this one.

I'm using all four holes on this tank as drains... which makes it dead silent. I went with 1 inch spa flex.

Still need to find a strainer intake for the lower pipe but the water level runs between the two drains controlled with the ball valve in the pic above and the second is just used as a backup. *I know a lot of you already know about this just explaining now so I don't have to later and to help people who haven't seen it before*

Here is my backup test =)  (Closed ball valves off completely to make sure the backups would do their job)

Got my float valve in for my top off and my $8 sump light.

On the drains the two white are the ones controlled with the ball valves all the water runs down these. I only stuck them in the water about 1 inch. The other two drains are the backups, I left them out of water on purpose because their sound will notify me that I need to adjust the ball valves ..

Just to clarify i didn't help move the lights I put a few extra holes in his ceiling. It was unfortunate that the new location for the existing can light was filled with duct work in between the trusses so Nick had to settle for a less than perfect location. But on a positive note his new tank will take the focus off everything else in his basement !!!

I like where he put the tank but the 2 things that bugged me and I like the least are the floor under it and the ceiling.

The uneven cement "tiles" under it were a pain in the ass when I leveled it for him.  Made me even happier I put nice smooth tiles under my 300 and got rid of the carpet.

the second is putting a canopy with the way the ceiling in front of that fireplace sits.  It would piss me off every time I needed to get into the tank.  He doesn't have  lot of room to get into the tank to do work.

But it is a beautiful setup and is going to be like his usual tanks, beautiful.

Well I got the stand wrapped finally.... and stained it to match the pillars we have in our basement.  Also ordered doors for it today!

I still need to work on the canopy, haven't even started that yet, I'm thinking I might just get the lights hung from the ceiling tomorrow, and then take my time building a canopy around them.

Anyway here are a few progression shots =)

Well I got some lights hung today. I had a couple Aqua Medic halide fixtures sitting around collecting dust so I decided to put them to use.

I put a 250w in the middle and 150watt fixtures on both ends, They actually lit the tank up really well.

These will get the tank going for a while, but I still plan to upgrade to something else in the near future. Maybe led? maybe ATI? not quite sure yet =)

Posted By: Nick801

Well its been one month to the day since I've added salt to this tank.

Finally finished the canopy wood work yesterday, I wanted to match the crown on the canopy with the crown that we did on the stand, but I didn't want the canopy door openings any smaller than the frame I had put up knowing that every once and a while my torso might have to be in that canopy =)

... So after buying quite a few small crown pieces (2 inch or less) from home depot and holding them up to the tank we just decided the detail was too small on the smaller pieces of crown, and that they wouldn't match the bulkiness of the stands detail so we decided to make our own. We literally glued every square on with hot glue *Thanks again to my friend Mike for coming out to help on this* Anyway I think it turned out really nice! =)

Now I just need to do a little more polyurethane and touch up, and I'll order the canopy doors tomorrow and once they are done I can finally sit back and enjoy this tank!

Also put a few more corals in this tank today... although It might take a while for it to not look so barren.

I'm right over the 3 month mark now so might as well update... still haven't done a water change at all from when I filled it with hose water maybe I'll get to that this week=)
I upgraded my ReefBrite to the 5 foot version and planing to upgrade the halides soon as well
starting to get some coraline algae growing, and I'm already starting to run out of spots for corals.

Thats pretty damn impressive. Thank you so much for sharing! I actually saw your site in the past and did not know that was you. You have some very nice looking stuff and once my tank is up and able to support life, I am going to reach out to you.

What kind of tang is that in the video and where do you find it? I have some some in stores that are a deep purple but that one almost looks jet black.

Thanks!
