I'm sure that this is just because it is not getting a lot of light on the back side of the coral but has anyone had their hammer extend out this far? The "tentacles" are extending about 2" further than the rest. The coral is happy as could be and is my oldest coral that I've had for almost 2 years but was just curious.

I actually had a coral once that was a hammer that did this all the time.  Not uncommon from what I have seen around here. SWEET picture though!

Mine does that same thing all the time. They act like sweeper tenticles and sting other corals that they can reach. Did you recently add a new coral that is in the area near it or where the water flow could be blowing across a new coral and then to the hammer? Most corals produce chemicals that they release into the water and if those a carried to a coral that is not a friendly species to the hammer it could extend the sweepers in an attempt to sting and remove the other coral. Nothing to worry about unless they can reach another coral.

No corals are near so nothing to worry about there. That's cool that they are more like probing tentacles. I figured since it was in the back of my tank it was the lighting but thanks for the input.
