Reefs Unlimited's (Ryan) 120G Reef
I was in the reef aquarium hobby for roughly 7 years 99' to 06' and then got completely out of the hobby to focus on building my business.  In November 12', I decided to dive back in.  The last 3 months have been a crazy ride but I'm having a blast!  I guess the idea is to collect the most rare/beautiful frags in the world and eventually have them grow out into show peices which I will put in a 400+ gallon reef tank in my home.  Ultimately I would like to have hundreds of frags covering every sqin of my 120.  Sort of like Jason Fox's frag tank on his site.  So far I have roughly 100 to 150.

Tank: Aqueon 120 w/Dual Overflow
Stand: Stand and Canopy built by Richins Carpentry
Lights: AI Vega's
Sump Style System.  I use a Bubble Magus dosing pump and skimmer with an auto top-off.
Next purchase is a nice camera and a macro lens.

Your tank looks really nice.  Glad you got back in.  How are you liking your Vega's so far?  I am running the Sol Blue's and not sure If I want to up grade yet.

What size of tank is that for your sump?

Does it have baffles?

Thanks man.  I like the Vega's.  I really like the bulb life and low heat/power compared to MH's.  There has been a learning curve with them.  Not a lot of info out there on the the vegas.  Just trial and error, but at this point I'm happy with them.  I haven't tried any other LED's out there though.

Its just a 20 gallon glass tank.  No, no baffles.  I wanted the space in my sump to be open and easy to maintain.  I originally had a reef octopus skimmer and bubbles would go into the display tank.  Switched to the Bubble Magus and the problem was taken care of.

If u don't mind me asking....what kind of clip on fans are those? Where did u get them? And are you happy with them? Loud? Thanks!

Posted By: Reefs Unlimited
Date Posted: March 09 2013 at 7:35pm
Bought them on amazon. They are preatty quiet. No louder than my return pump. With the 4 fans each they can move quite a bit of air. I have the fans hooked up to my pinpoint monitor. When water gets too hot they kick on. I run LEDs so heat hasn't been an issue but the fans provide some insurance.

Don't remember the brand. Just type in aquarium fan on amazon and they should pull up.

Wow rainbow crush has got to be the most insane rainbow out there right now. Love how both base colors swirl into each other and the eyes are bi-colored. I'm getting my frag this upcoming week. Keep the pics coming.

Hey what % are you running your Vega's? I've had mine since release day and I've changed the % about 99 times on all channels. I like the look of your color though in that FTS. Also are you running only two vega's? It looks like they are running lengthwise right? I might need to change mine to run that way. Looks like you get slightly better coverage then I do.

It's been a lot of trial and error. Currently running all purples and blues at 70%, red and green at 60% and white at 50%. Ya I'm running 2 of them parallel to the tank. I run them for 6 hours with 2 hour ramp up/down time on both ends. Hope that helps.

That's actually basically how I'm running my %'s. I do have red and green turned down to 40% though. Maybe I'll move those up. I think the big thing is changing the orientation of the lights. Mine seem to lack some coverage at the very very edges. That should fix that problem pretty quickly.

Over all I do love those light!

After 6 months I finally dumped the AI Vega's Clap and switched to T5's.  Only regret is that I didn't do it sooner.  Everything is growing like crazy.

It sounded like you liked the Vegas...why the switch?

Also...curious here...why have you kept all the frag plugs instead of mounting the corals on the rocks?

IMO vegas are terrible! They burned some corals, others lost color or didnt grow at all. Noone knows what the correct light spectrum is supposed to be. Customer support is nonexistant. Etc etc. realized if i want my tank to look like the reefs spotlighted on r2r i should probably use the same lights. T5s and halides are tried and tested. Didnt want to be guinea pig anymore with thousands of dollars and so many hours invested.

My corals are all on plugs because i plan to upgrade to a 400 gallon tank when i outgrow my 120. Wanted it to be as easy as possible to make the switch.

I too am debating on dumping my LED, I haven't burned anything as I took it very slow but I swear everything seems to start having the same brown/purple look. And I keep a close eye on params so it's not due to that. I can't decide if it's just me or if I am right lol. I went with a bridgelux fixture but am really debating getting a T5 to replace it!
Your stuff will look great when it all grows!
