So I moved my 125 tank into a 100 gallon taller tank with a small stand. As a consequence, I didn't have room for my sump and Refugium in the same stand, so I decided to setup my refugium as a separate tank that I would let grow Macro in the back and have like seahorses in the front... but.... it looks terrible:
 I got it drilled and piped nicely, but it just doesn't fit in the space I have availalble and it's just dirty (as refugiums should be).
ALSO, before I moved the tank... the macro wasn't even growing anymore... had plenty of light and water flow... I think the Live Rock just was taking all the load and didn't need the refugium at all.
My new tank is packed to the walls with all my live rock... any reason I shouldn't just ditch the Refugium altogether?

Patrick, I think the refugium helps with the times that the lights are off if you run the refugium lights opposite of your main tank lights. Benefits in my mind are: 1. Oxygen is not depleted if you run your lights opposite your main tank lights since photosynthesis is still going on. 2. Nutrients can be exported thru macroalgae cultivation and removal. 3. Little critters can use the "refugium" as a place to reproduce, sending more bugs thru the system and providing food. Just me. Nice to see another old-timer still on the board. Corey |

Lol yea I remember all that too. Wish I could keep macro alive in the main tank. I just don't have ton for the refugium in my stand. It'd in the living room so its odd to have running reverse daylight all night. I'm split on the whole thing... its just ugly lol ------------- Patrick |

This is my Personal opinion and don't want to get into a big aurguement over it. Discussing it is fine. "Ditch It". My 150 has ran for almost 5 years with no Refugium.

I agree, there's no need to run a refugium if you don't have the space. If you do get rid of it, I'd reommend running a Phosphate Reactor if you have the room. |
