      i bought my first tank with a over flow and a sump, and i don't know what im doing, i've had 4 cubes, redsea max 250 and now got a real tank, and i can't get the over flow part right if there are anyone willing to stop buy and help me out i would be forever so thanksful. i live in layton and my # is 801-682-0477. it a 92 gal corner tank with corner overflow. PLEASE HELP ME OUT THANK'S. P/S IT IS ALL SET UP WITH WATER THANKS AGIAN. RONNIE

| Ok so that is a durso system. The pipe that curves back down and has the screen attachment is the drain pipe. Water flows over the overflow and once it is higher than the curve it drains. The other pipe is the return. So the water will flow through the sump and be pumped back from your external pump. The level of the watet in your overflow usually can be adjusted by raising and lowering the drain pipe. Durso can be l loud where is the gurgulling coming from? |

First nice skimmer I ran my 75gallon tank like this for over a year. I never had a proble and about 1-2 times a week I would open the valve up all the way just to make sure that anything large would get cleared out.

| How many 90 degree angles do you have in your drain pipe? I've been told that they can create noise ... my plumbing has the one 90 degree that exits the overflow box and the rest are 45. |

My Durso had the air hole a little too big and it used to sound like a flushing toilet  I put a little bit of a cotton ball in the hole and it quieted right down ------------- - My Current Tank: 50g Starfire Cube Reef * Marine & Reef tanks since 1977 * |

the noise is comming from the drain part with the screen on it, i did go up to aquatic derams and ben told me to turn down the flow on the drain by closing the drain valve a little at a time and that seem to work, it is alot better still would like some one around layton to stop by and check things out, just worried about fire, or flooding my house, and the wellbeing of the live stock that is going in the tank, i just want to do it right. thanks to all of you for the info. all you guys and ladies make this hobby a real joy to be apart of. I agree! Put that ballast on the outside of your stand for sure! It will help dissipate heat, avoid salt creap and give you some peace of mind that it won't accidently fall into your sump. BTW - the plumbers tape is a great way to hang ballasts. I've been doing it like that for years. Nicely done.

Sorry - upon closer inspection it looks like you've used large hose clamps to hang the ballast. I've always used plumber's tape - which isn't really tape at all ....

1 other thing you can do is extend your return pipe up a little in your sump then if your durso ever gets plugged your return pipe will only return the amount of water above it eliminating overflowing your display tank. Also i used the draw string filter socks, and tol keep the sock from slipping off the pipe I glued Half of an old union on to the end of the pipe to give the sock some thing to hang on to when u tie it on the pipe. |

hey akira thats a great idea on the return pipe for the sock i think i will go that route, i do have to remove my sump to cut down the baffles, my water level in my sump are very high almost to the top and thats why i can lower my sock, hey ford if you would like to come by that is great could always use some advice on getting this tank up and running the right way, hey jaschall thanks for stoping buy your good guy you know before you showed up i was listing my tank for sale and did not relized it posted but it's not for sale yet. hey shane thanks for the tape idea i'll go buy lowes today and grab some to relocate my balast. thanks agian to all of you for all your help. hey ford you have my # you are welcome to come by. ------------- 60 gal rimless , 40 gal rimless 120 gal reef HOOKED ON SALT WATER 801-682-0477 |

Sounds great will have the sump pulled apart tonight and re sealed and let it dry over night we should be good, not sure on how high the baffles should be, but in order for me to lower the water I need to remove them and cut them down, ------------- 60 gal rimless , 40 gal rimless 120 gal reef HOOKED ON SALT WATER 801-682-0477 |

I have the same scenario with the sound on my dursos I ran some air line from the opening dwn behinde the tank to act as a muffler. It worked for me worth a try ------------- |
