Hey guys I got some new rock a little while ago and these things came attached. Any ideas on what they may be? They resemble aptasia but they have more color. Anybody know how to get rid of them? | That looks cool. Does it eat if you try to feed it? Does it retract into the rock when you poke it? Also about how big is it? Hav they spread at all? |

They are kinda cool looking. :) I don't feed it, on purpose anyway. It probably does get food. They have spread like crazy actually and seem to sting my corals. They do retract into the rock when poked at. The biggest one on my tank is about the size of a quarter but they are all different sizes. ------------- 125 Mixed Reef |

| Okay i think theyre aptaisia nems. They look exactly the same and they havd the same characteristics. They do have a cool color but i would try to get ontop of them. Get some Berghia nudibranches |

They do look a lot like aptasia but there are still some differences. Anyone else have any experience with these anemones? I want to be certain that they are aptasia because I'd like to get a couple berghia nudibranchs. If they aren't aptasia then the nudibranchs will starve. ------------- 125 Mixed Reef |

They're called sponge anemones, in the same family as light bulb anemones and aiptasia's, though the sponge and light bulbs aren't nearly as invasive. They'll reproduce if well fed but won't spread out and take over like aiptasia's, I'm not sure if a berghia would eat them or not, I had peppermint shrimp that ate aiptasia's but never touched the lightbulb and sponge anemones that were also in the tank, berghia might eat them but I have no experience with berghias. -Edit: If you want to get rid of them, kalk mix may work, I've used a mix of 1pt kalk and 1pt anhydrous calcium chloride pellets (prestone driveway heat or kent's turbo pro calcium) to 1pt water, mixes hot since the calcium chloride reacts with the water, then target delivered with a syringe or feeder. This has worked wonders against aiptasias in the past for me and was effective against sponge and lightbulb anemones that were encroaching on corals. ------------- 12G Nano Cube | DIY LED Member of GCFB |
