Over Thanksgiving I went to Catalina Island with "Fatman" (member here). Unfortunately due to a sinus infection I was unable to dive, but I did get to snorkel a bit. These are some of the photos:

Wow, all that amazing life photographed in just one trip?!! In two different pics I believe I can see the same anemone, but it's upside down. Why is that? More pics please.

Unfortunately I still haven't figured out why I can't use my computer to use the site. So, no more photos for now. Sorry. And as to why the are multiple shots of the same stuff from different angles, it's because I take about a bajillion shots of everything. I'm not the best photographer, so it's good practice. These photos are nothing compared to what others saw diving, but oh well. I did see a 300-500 lb black sea bass. He totally freaked me out, and the photos didn't turn out. Anyway, I'll post more when I get this login issue fixed.

The two pics from different angles clearly showed that the anemone had released and was flipped over hanging onto the rock with it's tentacles. I was just wondering why? Did you touch it to see how strongly it was hanging on? Not important, just curious.

Mark, I can assure you that the anemone did not release and flip over while I was photographing it. The photos are of the same anemones from different angles...and all shots were taken within seconds of each other. The anemone was not performing its Olympic gymnastics routine for me. I also never touch anything while diving/snorkeling; it's a strict rule of mine (except hacking away in self defense at kelp trying to drag me to the pits of hell.) The only thing I can figure is that you're confused because of the anemone's structure. I believe it's an Anthropleura sola anemone (or similar species), and their oral disk is rather enlarged compared to other anemones. Maybe that looks like the foot? I have no idea...but the anemone didn't move.

WOOO HOOO - looks like I finally have full access to the site again. I reset everything back to factory settings. Blech. Oh well. So here's me trying to dive again (so now you'll know what I look like for Thursday!) And yes, that's a 7mil Farmer John wetsuit (dual layer in the chest). I also had a hood and used waterproof reusable heat packs in my wetsuit...and was still cold. Guess I need to get my drysuit cert. ;-) Starfish dude...different one Thanksgiving dinner. The guys caught about 20 lobsters, so we ate well! The squid mated for a few hours under our boat one night...quite amazing to watch! They die shortly after mating, so the ocean floor was covered in carcasses the next morning.

I agree with Adam.
I was curious. That's all. I wasn't blaming you, not at all. I meant no offense. I was just curious about the anemone. From the two points of view it seems that the anemone has flipped itself over. The mouth/tentacle side is holding on to the rock while the foot is expanded and folded over as though it's trying to move, trying to find another rock opposite from the one it's on. Not that unusual for anemones new to our tanks, but perhaps more unusual for anemones in the wild. I'm sorry if my observation caused any alarm. Please forgive me. Thanks for the pics and Happy New Year.

Nope, we're good...it's just frustrating arguing over what I saw. This anemone was correctly attached the entire time, and the foot was never visible. This species of anemone has an...almost engorged...oral disc. I saw many of these anemones, and this is how they all looked. Cold water species, of just about everything, can be *much* different than what we see for our aquariums. The white line you see going across the oral disc in the 2nd pic corresponds to one of the 4 white lines from the 1st pic's oral disc. The oral disc is segmented into 4, and my best guess is that this helps the anemone take in larger chunks of food than normal anemones. Cold water critters don't have the abundance of food warmer water critters do, so they have unique survival abilities. Just so we're clear...

Thanks so much! My hubby was in Afghanistan, and I was new to Utah at Thanksgiving. The trip gave me a new adventure to get my mind off everything. Being on a live-aboard was a...different...experience. By day 3 everything was mildew & rotting fish smelling...and had that saltwater slime feel to it. I didn't get any photos of it (camera battery died), but the next coolest thing to the squid mating was that we came across a massive dolphin migration. Pretty much as far as your eyes could see were dolphins. I'll double check for photos, but I think these were my best shots. The rest were just the same things from various angles & camera settings. Maybe I'll post pics from some other dive trips!
