I just talked to a buddy who works for the power company and he said it could be out for a couple days and that he'd guess mine, in Roy, will be out till tomorrow.
So where is the best place to get a generator? My house is already cold and Im super worried about the tank. ------------- Indefinite hiatus from sw aquariums. Once I have my glorious return I'll set back up the following. 50 Gallon rimless cube. 180 Gallons mixed reef paradise |

I know Cabelas recently had 4000W generators for around $300.00. While it's a bit of a drive for you, it may be worth it if they are still on sale. ------------- A government strong enough to give you everything you want, is powerful enough to take everything you have. |

Our power went out at 2:30 am. Both mp40's on battery back up stalled, Went back on at 4 and off at 5:30 and I gave in and fired up the generator. Power was out for 7 hours total (farmington) but my shop in bountiful is still out. My tank there is loving the mp10 with battery back up!! Home Depot has one on sale for Christmas. Well my Mother in Law in Clinton has power again. I live really close to the sub station by Kents. so I am hoping that my power is back up and running before I get home. If not I did find a generator to use. ------------- 220g , large elite aquatics sump. 3 Radion Pro Gen 3 lights 3 Mp 40's |

if you want something to get you by and aren't in the market for a generator, I went out and bought a car jump starter kit.....they are about 40-50 bucks and hold a charge for quite a while. They have a typical cigarette lighter outlet on them, so I went out a bought a adapter that splits the cigarette outlet into three normally grounded outlets. It has powered a small heater and powerhead for me for 8+ hours...that way you still have some circulation for corals/fish and can keep the water from getting too cold too fast....just a thought... Other than that..stir the water here and there and throw a blanket over the tank for insulation, this helps the water temp will drop considerably less as time passes, especially if your tank is open top....I experimented with this and was surprised with how effective it was. mine came fully charged when purchased....got the jump starter (car section) and adapter (electronics section) at a large Smiths in Salt Lake....I would have went to walmart or something if I had one close because it probably would have been cheaper... just make sure you plug the jump starter in to charge it back up when your power comes back on so it is ready for the next outage...

| Cal Ranch in Farr West has plenty of Honda Generators. The EU2000 was $1000 or $900 with a new Cal card (store credit card maybe?) The EU1000 was like $800 or maybe $700. |

I am still without power and with 5 tanks at home
I have one battery air pump that I move from tank to tank and right now I'm heating up water for each tank on a camping stove How low can the tank get without problems to corals and fish? Linn ------------- Pay it forward... |

My frag tank was 64 and my main was 69 before I got the heaters going. I had to go buy more heaters because with how cold it is inside the house the tank heaters can't keep up.

| corals and fish are really pertty resilient to adverse conditions..if not I wouldn't be in this hobby, they might not be happy. It's going to get cold tonight and tomorrow. Try blankets....anything to insulate the tank. Oh yea don't forget about yourself!! |

| you could get a DC-AC adapter from one of the car parts places for around 20-30 bucks. if you have 2 cars, rob the battery out of one and hook it up.. it'll be good for a few hours... |

my power finally came back, tank ran 8 hours on battery air pump... i called on generators and everyone I tried said they were out, even harbor freight. tank temp dropped to 72* (from 79)... powers been on for an hour and i hit 74, enough relief to go to bed. 2 500w heaters are warming at the rate of 2* per hour... not too drastic. best part of large water volumes is the rate at which they heat/cool. I'd have gone nuts if I owned a nano! I like my ~160 gallons. ------------- I asked the Lord for the blessing of Patience... he gave me 6 kids! 125g Reef / 55g Sump-Fuge |

The cheapest generator I have ever seen is at Harbor Frieght. With that being said, I dont know how long it would last you. They have a 800 watt unit for $130. If you have the money the Honda EU2000 is an excellent unit. It is the one I bought before I got into the Marine world. At 2000 watts, it will run a small space heater and my tank.

definitely not a fun day/night. I had some battery powered air pumps but I had a hard time keeping the temp up in my tank. Didnt have internet access so I couldnt jump on here but it was awesome to see everyone who was willing to lend their generators. I really like the idea of using a car jump starter with the power converter I think I will pick that up and have just in case for next time. My temp was back up by this morning and well tonight after work I'll see how everything is doing. Hope everyone's tanks that were without power yesterday are doing good now! ------------- |

Just got power back...after 32 hours. Stupid me didn't have the Vortechs & backups hooked up b/c all my stuff is still in a small holding tank from the cross-country move. I ended up resorting to those cheapo battery powered airstones (2 of them). My tank is in the basement, and this morning I found the tank at ~40 degrees. In a panic I threw a couple of the regenerable heat packs into the tank...which has it at 50 degrees now. Needless to say...there will be losses.  Nothing has gone yet though...just looks terrible. | Oh no. Sorry to hear about your tank. I'm very thankful my neighbors let me use their generator. I'm going on about 36 hrs without power. Apparently there was heavy damage around me so it might be a little while longer. |

 As low as 60 or even a little lower if it is a gradual shift over many hours (like during a power outage). The upper range is more restrictive. Over 85 can cause fairly rapid death in SPS coral. Soft coral can survive short periods of 85-90 degrees. When the tank stops pushing water, the major concern is suffocation. That's why a battery powered air pump is IMO, the best and also least expensive solution for short term outages. There are two benefits of lower temperature, which puts the tank in a kind of suspended animation: 1. cooler water slows metabolism and respiration 2. cooler water holds more oxygen for easier respiration These two effects work together to sustain the tank inhabitants during a relatively long Winter power outage. Yup, I've had no problems in those temp ranges before (~60-85)...and air stones have saved me many times. But...from personal experience...a tank in the 40's won't survive. WOW! 100% losses, that does suck!!!  I'm so sorry to hear that. I'd be willing to bet there are plenty of people here that would be happy to help out with some frags when you have things ready for them again. I know I could find some frogspawn and hammer for you.I think I'm going to find a way to get a generator very soon so that if this happens in my area in the future I'm not fighting for one of the last few at a store or going without and losing everything. My shop tank hit 60.2 The battery back up for the mp10 failed after 2 days and I had to set up a generator to just run a 34g tank and heater. Took 4 hours to get the temp up and the fish are all still here. Will, thanks. The house just got too cold after 32 hours, so there wasn't really anything I could do (other than a generator...which is now on my purchase list). Looks like the fish are all gone, and all the SPS are dropping their tissue. Most LPS are stark white...and the rest are dropping their tissue. The water is beyond cloudy, and I'm doing water changes as fast as I can make water. As soon as I can get everything back under control, I'll start making a wish list of frags I need. Just sad that most of those corals I've had for 5 years. We came out pretty well from the storm. Our power was out one day, basically, but our internet was down longer. For all but a couple hours I had my main circulation and heater on my generator. The temperature got down to 67 in the tank. About the time I realized i had another heater with the hospital tank to try to bring it up more, the power came on. I didn't think about a blanket until I got back on here. Remember the weather people are saying the same storm should happen tonight, Sunday.
