So I've been noticing some of my zoas have appeared "eaten" by something. I don't have any tankmates that would generally eat zoas. Although I have seen one of my Emerald Crabs picking at them, but I think he's just getting at algae that's attached to them.

Anyway, so tonight I'm geeking out just looking at all the little crevasses and I notice a zoa polyp head being dragged into a hole/cavern in one of my rocks. As I watch more closely I notice some striped antenna's, then a creature makes it's way out with a centipede type body with a metallic appearance. It's probably a few inches long, and about a 1/4" in diameter, and vicious. It devoured that zoa polyp in just a few moments. It's got giant teeth/jaws/pinchers and is REALLY interesting looking.

Does anyone know the best way to get rid of this thing? He's big enough and capable of eating my Scooter Blenny and whatever else he wants, so I want him out.

Google "Bobbit Worm" and look at the images if you're not familiar with them. I wasn't until now.

holy crap, that link and story is no joke. I would save what you can from the tank, then drain and fill it with gasoline and burn it.

I'm working on getting a picture or video. He's super shy, so any sort of movement by me or the fish and he darts back in his hole. And, he's got multiple connected holes. Either that, or I have 2 of them. I almost had him enticed out by a mysis shrimp, but he would barely poke his antenna out.  I've seen him poking out at the top of the rock, and at the bottom of the same rock. Now that I know he's there and what to look for, I'm going to try and sneak up on him after the lights go out.

He's sort of silver/brass in color and has a white band about 4 or 5 segments back. His antenna are purple and black striped. He's got quite a tunnel system and it's in a rock that's a supporting rock for other rocks, and my large anemone is attached to this rock as well.  So I'd rather not remove the whole rock at this time.

Yeah I found your thread when researching what the hell this thing is.

I think I'm going to work on removing the rock and either placing it in fresh water, or hang it above a bucket of salt water and see if this thing will come out. I don't know what else to do.

I did a freshwater dip on the rock where I had 2 residing and it worked like a charm.  Didn't kill anything else on the rock either. (of course I didn't have any corals, etc on it at the time)

I spent the evening entertaining it. Put on some music, made it some dinner... I fed it some krill, got a brief video of it grabbing my feeding stick a couple times. It doesn't come out of it's hole very much or for very long. It's shy, but not afraid to poke its head out for food, or the potential of food. I moved the zoa colony it's been snacking on, so hopefully that slows down the loss.  At this point I'm going to keep it under observation. It's too small to harm any of my fish, and I've moved my scooter blenny, which is my smallest fish, to my other tank.

if it was my tank i think i would take the rock out and and dip it in some fresh water and try to get that thing out of there before he eats more coral or fish if the anemone is in a flat surface on the rock u can easily take him off there.

unfortunately his nem is huge and is well buried into the rock.

Yeah my nem isn't going to be easy to move. He's well attached with two hosted clowns and is quite large. And, that's the only rock he's allowed to be on (no corals).

Something so terrible and hideous should not have been so cutely named. I can only pray to the the aquarium gods that I will never have one of those things into my tank.

Good luck getting it out man and watch your fingers they sure look like they have a nasty bite.

I just found out that I have a Mantis Shrimp in my tank which sounds almost as bad as your Biobbit worm.  I freaked out and bought this trap on Amazon out of pure fear.  Not sure if it would work for you?

Mantis shrimp will not harm corals, there are two distinct types: Smashers and Spearers. Smashers prey on inverts like other shrimp, crabs, etc. While spearers prey mostly on fish. The only real way to tell the difference is to look at the structure of the front legs/pincers. If it looks like a hammer its a smasher, if it looks like...well a spear; it's a spearer.

Honestly I'd rather have this worm with a face only a mom could love, over a Mantis Shrimp.
