I'm pretty new to salt water tanks so I'm pretty much just learning as I go. It's kind of a big task with 200 gallons and so many Q's. Right now I just noticed under a rock there was a worm that was about 1 inch long and red in color. Is it bad, good or what does it mean to my tank?

Probably a bristle worm.  Good.

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the board Sean.

Quote so I'm pretty much just learning as I go.

I encourage you to learn before you go. I guarantee you'll save money, time and lives.

Quote Right now I just noticed under a rock there was a worm that was about 1 inch long and red in color.

As the others have suggested it's likely a bristle worm/fire worm. About 98%+ of these worms are good news. However it is worth mentioning that every now and then an "evil" variation finds it's way into home aquaria.

Quote Is it bad, good or what does it mean to my tank?

If it's a good worm, it will basically scavenge for leftover food and decaying matter. Keep in mind that a dying animal, even if it looks healthy, counts as decaying matter.

Hope that helps,
Chris

In 12 years of reefing experience with quite a few tanks the only "evil variation" I ever found was green! It looked exactly like a bristleworm except for color. It was fun to finally have a Bristleworm that I needed to remove. And with a chunk of brine shrimp wrapped in a big wad of Bridal Veil material on a length of fishing line, it was the easiest thing I ever caught out of a reef aquarium.
