So I got a powder brown about month and half ago. He went into a QT tank, was getting ready to transfer him as he was looking healthy, swimming good and eating great. Till this... Couple days ago started to notice what looked to be a small rash thought maybe he just rubbed a rock too hard, but it has gotten worse and I have no idea what it is. I was hoping someone would have seen or dealt with this so I know how to treat it as I have never seen anything like this before. It is hard to tell by the picture I know, phone camera I'm sorry. If I could describe it it looks like lesions or leprosy I guess. Also his one side fin looks similar to fin rot, dont know if the 2 are combined or seperate problems. Here is another tidbit if it helps, it is only on his one side, other side of him looks healthy and normal. Closest thing I could find similar on the net is gas bubble, but I dont seem to have the causing factors in my tank. Also stress seems to also not be a factor as he will swim right up to the glass and look at me when I am around the tank. Here are the specs: 40 Gallon 1 - Koralia 4 (Blowing near surface for gas exchange) Heater running temps between 78-80 throughout the day and night Salinity - 1.025 PH - 8.1 CH - 140 Ammonia - 0 Nitrite - 0 Nitrate - 20 (Never gone above 40 as been checking weekly with water changes)  ------------- This isn't a hobby...its a sport...they should put it in the olympics. |

I've never had luck keeping these guys alive, I wish you the best.
I have a blue lipstick that gets some spots on him periodically and he recovers just fine.
For me the power browns get ich or something else and never make it through no matter what I do.
What I would try is feed him a bunch and keep him healthy and he should be able to get over it himself. Lots of nori.

Many QT tanks don't use live rock, mostly they use pvc pipes for the use of the fish to hide, also having a sand bed since when using medication it makes it less effective. Powder tangs are difficult to keep.
how many lbs of live rock do you have in the QT? how long was the fish on the fish store? Do you feed it nori occasionally? how big is the tang? |

We had a similar problem with our tang, he was in our community tank, but we figured it would stress him too much to catch him, if we could even catch him.
we used a product called KanaPlex by Seachem. from the aquarium. It took about three doses over about a week and he is almost completely back to normal. ------------- JayDee 8016042780 90 Gallon 30 Gallon sump G3 Skimmer |

Yea, I hope this helps as I know many products will harm corals, inverts or other things. This one had no warnings and has seemed to cause no problems what so ever. I was so happy to see our tang looking happy. Also the use of a UV sterilizer seems to be helpful. There's one online for about 50 bucks, I found the same one at the petco in bountiful. | powder browns not too hard to keep. you said your CH-140??? ALK? I think its stressed. other fish? a 40 is a bit small for tangs unless very small. try garlic, grounding probe just keep it eating and if its stressers go away it should pull through. |
