Over the last several weeks I�ve notice an interesting change in my corals. Almost all of them have become quite pale in color; some are almost white but everything thing still acts and looks health (other than the color). Is anyone else seeing this happen that has started using Crystal Sea Marinemix? Please post your experiences so far with this salt whether good, bad, or unchanged.

Last saturday I did my first water change with the Bioassay Marinemix. I have noticed that a few mushrooms and button polyps have looked bleached. I thought that it might have been related to recently adding more lighting over my tank. However, it could be related to this salt mix. I'll have to keep an eye on it after my next water change.

Flaz, did the salt mix up completely or was it milky? I haven't used the MEI stuff yet.

It mixes up a little milky, but I didn't have time to add it to my tank for about a day and by that time it was mostly clear (maybe a slight haze to it). Once it was added to the tank it was all clear in several hours.

So, would you buy into the notion (from reefcentral) that solid (undisolved) salt may be dusting your corals? Please keep us informed of any developments in your tank. My next water change isn't due for a month.

Na, I don't think so. I do my water changes through my refugium and the circulation back to the main tank is very slow (about 5 gallons per hour) so it takes a long time for water changes to mix into my main tank. I think there is some difference (maybe good, maybe bad) with the Crystal Sea salt that caused the colors to pale. Looking at my tank today, everything but the brown zoanthids look as good or better than they ever did (not counting the color change). I'm mixing another bath of water right now and will change some more water tomorrow. I'll see how this goes and post the results.

Reading through the RC thread, it appears that several have experienced this "bleaching" effect from the Bio-Assay salt.

Some say that it's just shock from changing product and that after the initial change, their inverts seem to thrive more so than before the change.

I'm very interested in why the shock to the system. I am just starting a new tank so I hope I don't have the effect that changing salt does.

Lots of folks on the club got the salt, so we should have plenty of input. I for one will definately post my experience, good or bad, here on the boards for all.

My wife is making me remodel the living room before my tank goes up. Should be up and running by Tuesday at the latest. My rock from Tampa Bay Saltwater and East Coast Clams will be delivered here at the airport on Friday the 9th, so I have to be up and running then at the latest.

I'll definately follow this thread.

Perhaps that salt is more caustic than other salts when first mixed. Try aerating it for a full day before using.

Everything has been fine for the most part. It seems that the zoanthids were affected the greatest and the several types I have are still quite pale but they are getting darker again (very slowly). The Green slimer I have is also very light but it seems to be doing fine... I've now done 3 10% water changes.

IME, I've had no problems what-so-ever with the salt. My tank has been up for a little over 2 weeks now, and I've done several water changes using the salt. I also started this tank using this salt.

What critters I have in the tank are thriving, thriving as much as they can in a cycling tank. I have tons of feather dusters poking out of the rocks and lots of snails running about. I don't have any corals in there, so I can't specify anything good nor bad about bleaching.

As Mark said, I've not heard anything since negative since this thread.

As an overall experience with the salt, how would you rate it? Are you seeing anything positive that might outweigh the negative effects you've witnessed? How has the tank reacted to the two subsequent water changes you've done?

I haven't seen anything markedly positive about using the salt other than the price and the fact that I've done 3 large water changes in the last several months (which can only be good)... Subsequent water changes didn't cause any obvious effects, just the first one.

I bought a case from Sean and I have probably changed about 10 gallons worth in my 75 gallon tank. I have seen no negative results. I made sure to aerate the new water overnight before adding it. All my corals visually look normal (no bleaching) and the green star polyps grow so fast you can almost watch it.

Overall I am happy with the salt. Nothing negative to report.

I have done about half a dozen small water changes with this new salt. I haven't noticed any negative effects that I would attribute to this salt. I have been mixing the water the day prior to doing the water change and circulating it with a small power head. It hasn't been cloudy and I haven't noticed undisolved particles.

Mine is slightly cloudy when first mixed. The cloudy water becomes clear after about 30 mins though.
