What should be my target flow rate for a 56 gallon display tank?  What size pump should I buy to push water from the sump up to the tank? (about 4 feet up)
If "more is better" is the answer, then so be it. Smile

Also, are there any formulas for determining how much water overflows through a 3/4" pbc pipe?  How much gravity driven flow through a 2" pipe?

Many thanks.

I'm no expert but what I've learned here is for your sump you shouldn't have too much flow.  about what your skimmer can handle.  get the rest of your flow in the display.

There are links on this page that have that information.

Thanks Smacky,
Exactly what I needed.

Summary:
3/4" pipe with gravity flow is about 11 gpm or 660 gph
1.5" pipe with gravity flow is about 35 gpm or 2,100 gph

Keep in mind that depending on how much air you will be pushing down your gravity feed pipe will greatly effect how much flow you will get.
