looking forward to seeing your progress!  I really like that glass holes over flow kit, takes up minimal space.

Yeah, I was really having a hard time deciding what I wanted to do as far as an overflow goes.

I wanted to drill the bottom and do a center overflow, but decided I could deal with pipes sticking out the back for the extra amount of space I will be gaining from the overflow kit.  I will still place it in the center though with two 3/4" loc line returns on each side.

Well, after a long night of shopping, drilling, fitting and painting, here is my completed overflow for my tank.  Glass only chipped minimally, nothing a little plumbers silicone grease wouldn't fix.  I will be leak testing tomorrow, and making any adjustments if needed.

I used 1" returns on each side, attached 3/4" loc line heads, and will be finishing the rest of the plumbing after my stand is done.

That looks really good! That is the route I wish I had gone looking back. I am still considering draining my tank a few inches and drilling the back glass to add the returns through there. At least on one side of the tank.

You could put a SCWD on your return and have the sides alternate flow. However I would just let them both run at like 200 gph and use the Vortech's for all your flow. You will laugh at every other powerhead on the market once you see what the Vortech's can do. At least I do! LOL

Looks good man! Come check my tank out when you are ready.

Thats the plan, going to run a Mag 5 for the return, I think that should give 200gph per head (hopefully)

As soon as I get my biocube sold I will order my lighting, and my first MP10.   If I feel the need for another one, which I probably will.... LOL i'll order that later this fall when I start stocking more SPS in the tank.

you will want a second vortech, trust me. I thought one would be enough and has been for now but I need another one. You will have the benefit of the second return though that I don't have. My vortech moves water really well to 30 inches or so and then dies the last 6 inches.

How wide does the water push out of the Vortech?  Just curious since I have the option of mounting the MP10 on the back wall (not that I would really want to do that, but was a fun idea to play with LOL)

i use these on my frag tanks and sea swirls they look super clean and dont have to use any adapters . plus they pull water from behind them which helps generate less dead spots

Well, with a couple hours of work and cleanup, I got my stand done.  Kind of paid off to have home depot cut everything for me at the store

Stand measures at about 40"

It doesn't push water wide enough that you would want it on the back. Keep it on the side. I have mine front of center and about 5 inches from the top of the water.

Well, ignore the jawfish condo in the back (was used to capture my bicolor blenny, and will be removed once he decides to come out of it), but here's my first FTS. Things are still a little dirty in the tank, and some microbubbles which should be fixed after I get my filter sock, but at least it's a start

Yeah, it's definitely quieter now, I just need to tackle the micro bubbles issue, I am thinking a filter sock might solve the problem. That and filling the water a bit higher in the sump

Well, here goes. I know it's been a while since I have updated this, but I finally am getting things back in motion. Got my skimmer going and my rock in the tank, I probably will hunt for one more piece of live rock, but that will come later, I finally have room for coral

Here's my skimmer after two days, I had emptied the cup once due to over-tuning and pouring a bunch of clean water in the collection cup, so this was about a day and a half worth of skimming with the skimmer still breaking in.

And here's a picture of my new rock, I'll get some better pictures as soon as I clean the glass up and move a couple more rocks around. Need to remove the diy jawfish house too, if I can ever get my blenny to come out of it for more than a minute.

I love the new skimmer, it's extremely silent, I had my return pump off and I had to try really hard to listen for it. It actually officially broke in about 10 minutes ago so i'll post some more pictures tomorrow of the skimmate

Here's a couple pictures of the skimmate I pulled. I dumped out the skimmer right after I took those pictures, and this was up until about an hour ago.

Please note that the "bubble line" was about 65% the way up the neck, so it was an even skim, not too dry, and not too wet (from what I understand)

Posted By: Ryan Thompson
Date Posted: September 30 2010 at 10:28pm
That looks really wet to me. Mine doesn't pull out an inch of gunk in like 7-8 days but it coats the collection cup lid and neck with a thick slime. I would lower where the bubbles break if that makes sense.

Posted By: Ahanix
Date Posted: September 30 2010 at 10:38pm
Makes perfect sense, I need to figure out a good level though because with how low the bubbles were the neck is completely black    I lowered it a little more though just to see what it would do since that seemed really wet to me too

Nice stand looks very clean and neat. I just got a 40 Breeder and was wondering if you had the measurements that you had home depot cut for you or any build plans I might be able to use to do the same stand? Thanks for sharing tour tank thread!

Well, with great excitement and a bit of sadness, I will be moving forward with phase 2 of my tank.

First thing worth mentioning is that I took a trip to San Diego and trusted a friend to take care of my aquarium while I was gone. I ended up coming home to all of my fish dead except for one (Which were all left in my tank for however long they were dead), glass I could not see in, and a skimmer that was 75% full of black tar. I'm glad that my Skimmer at least saved my corals if anything, but now I am down to one extremely small clown, and the rest of my inverts. So out with the old and in with the new. I guess if anything I can really stock my tank with the fish that I truly want.

This phase will be correcting any previous things I did not like about my tank (this includes things that my wife wanted changed as well)

My stand didn't turn out exactly how I wanted it, the paint job is pretty horrible and I will actually be selling this or pretty much giving it away for someone that wants to spend the time on it as soon as everything is moved over

Without further ado, here is my list of improvements for my tank

1- I purchased flex PVC for my drain line, this along with a couple of other things will make my tank extremely silent.

2- I purchased a new stand

3- This one is a possibility, but not really a necessity. I may be changing my 20g High Sump to a 20g Long, but thats only if I can find one by the time I switch everything over, which will be Thursday

4- And for the last thing, I purchased a new light, I absolutely loved my fishneedit fixture, but it wont fit in my new half canopy (All sides and a partial top), this brought a perfect option into the realm - The 6 Bulb 36" Tek Elite, which should be here on Thursday.

So pretty much I just need to buy a few pieces of PVC from Home Depot, find a bulb combo I really want, and push forward with the rest of the plans. I'll post pictures of everything when I am done, and also post the ad for the Stand.

Well, off to a new start, spent the majority of my day yesterday, and a little bit today (Re-Aquascaped twice ) working on my tank.

Anyways, I got my stand done, plumbing complete, Tek Elite 6x39w Fixture installed, and everything moved over, these shots are a little dirty, and were taken with a cellphone, but i'll take better shots as soon as my tank clears up completely.

Looks great, rocks are purpling up nice. Sorry bout your fish man. My tanks is a little over stocked right now maybe you would consider a trade for some of my livestock. I've got a Flame Angel, Banghai Cardinal, Fire goby, Six Line Wrass, B/W Clown, Orange Clown, and a Royal Gramma. I think that's all... Did you decide against the canopy?

I'm cool with working out a trade :)

And I am still trying to decide about the canopy. I might do it but ill have to sand some grooves in it to get it to fit my light just right

Update, re-scaped tonight, and I now have 4 fish. Two Black Clowns, Sixlie Wrasse and I just picked up a Midas Blenny.

Also had levels tested yesterday, Phospates Nitrates/Nitrites were at 0 and Calcium is at 480. Will test the other levels at a later date

Also, sorry for the crappy cellphone pic, I would get out the wifes Nikon, but figured I would wait till the corals grow out a bit to get some serious shots going on.

Sorry I haven't gotten back to everyone

Tank seems to be doing great, i've pulled off the dosing though due to bleaching of corals and the white stringy bacteria on my marco rock, have been pushing some water changes more often to help get it back to normal and it seems like everything is starting to do a lot better

Birdsnest has been growing quite a bit, and so has my blue tipped acro

i'll post some pictures hopefully tonight to show everyone the progress that it has made
