Filtration Suggestions Hey everyone I ended up not setting my tank up this weekend instead I thought I would get some input from all of you on filtration. I was originally planning to set up a sump in the basement because the stand is kind of small to put a container that can hold any major quantity of water. Anyways after talking to Mark Peterson he suggested that it would probably be better just to run a deep sand bed i.e. 1.5� Oolitic and .5� of Live Aragonite Sand with a few power head�s for circulation. Any ways I wanted to see what others are doing and see what suggestions they would have for me. If you have done stuff you wish you hadn�t let me know. And if you wish you had done something you didn�t please let me know! I would love to hear what you all have to say. Oh no here we go again... I like sumps. Are you planning to run a skimmer? If you are, it's better (imo) to use a skimmer in the sump (or external) rather then a hang on the back. How big's the tank? A refugium might be nice too. Closed loop cirulation is the way I'll go next time and keep the powerheads out. If people are having good luck with the deep sand beds I think this is the way I will go. And to aswer your questions; Yes I do plan to run a skimmer. (can you get away without one?), The tank is aprox 140gal 48Lx30Dx24W, The tank is drilled but it is "weird" places on the bottom. 4 holes more in the middle than the corners, I think this may be why he mentioned the deep sand bed. If I run a sump in the basement I would for sure have a refuge! Also anyone willing to let me look at thier tank? Or come and see what you think of the one I have. (I am in the Taylorsville area) Thanks, -=J=-

You ought to see my brother Rodney's 20 gallon tank. It's a year old now. He has no sump/refugium but it looks great and should look better every year without any external stuff or skimmer. It's using Utah sand and rock too. He also lives in in the Taylorsville area! BTW - a skimmer is not normally a gadget that was built for the sump, it's just that seems to be a convenient place for people with sumps to place it! Skimmers are not necessary for a new tank, whether the hobbyist be advanced or beginner. Sumps/refugium are such a popular addition these days, you get a lot of people saying that's the only way to go, including me, until I realized I was being so opinionated! This hobby is expensive enough without people saying you must have this or that gadget or addition. My opinionated 2 cents |

Hey Mark, how about a detailed description of your brothers tank. Its almost the size I have and the less equipment I have to get the sooner I can get up and running! (Its killing me!!) I have the lighting, the sand is coming along with some LS to seed it with, the rock I have with several pieces in a friends tanks being seeded. I'm still going to purchase some from the LFS. As an afterthought, I have a Fluval 402 stashed in my closet, will that be handy for anything for a saltwater tank? Thanks, you are all great! ------------- Mike Layton, Ut. |

Mike,
The images of his tank have been posted elsewhere in a previous post, but I emailed them to you.
Rinse the Oolitic sand and place 1" -1.5" on the bottom the tank. (I broke the bottom of a 10 gal tank by dropping wet sand out of a bucket. It landed like a brick!)
Add saltwater to 3/4 full. Pour slowly onto a dinner plate to keep from stirring the sand.
Check temperature.
Run pumps for a day if more than 50% of the saltwater is freshly mixed.
Add live sand. The tank water will get cloudy at this point.
Add rock and press bottom pieces down into the sand for stability. Try to place bottom pieces of rock on edge so that they don't cover any more sand than necessary.
Add saltwater to 95% full.
Add 1-3 pieces live rock. Turn and shake live rock to release air bubbles.
Add some soft coral frags.
This completes the work for the first day. Enjoy.
Let it run for a week and if the coral polyps are coming out add a couple Green Chromis Damsels, or more coral or both.
After a week with the Green Chromis you can add some more fish and more coral. Investigate fish needs and eating habits to be sure there will be no future problems.

| Mark after giving it some more thought I think I am just gonna use the sand bed method you mentioned. Why add all the external stuff if a tank will run and operate great without it??
