How long does it take for a clam to be happy in a new tank.? I am waiting for it to open up all the way.  I have metal halides so I think he is getting enough light.  He has been in there for about three days

I suppose it could still be adjusting...but mine opened and looked happy pretty quick.  The last one I put in (I have two now), was fully "open" the next day.

I would suggest:
1.  checking the care requirements on your specific type of clam
2.  Checking the water quality...salinity, temp, etc.
3.  Watch and make sure nothing is "bothering" the clam.  some fish will nip at them.

What  type of clam is it? Like Shawn, Ive never had a clam take more than a day to open up. I would check his suggestions and post what you find here so we can help you out.

This is where a pic would be very helpful.

Sorry, been out of town for a while.  All my water parameters seem ok.  I moved him up a little higher in the tank so I will see what happens.  He will open a little but not like I feel he should.

When you moved it, did you check for pyramid snails?
