Ok. I am young and want to get into a saltwater tank. I would like to go to someone's house and look at theirs, but that would be... awkward. So... does anyone in logan have any 9th graders that go to North Cache? Then it could just be a visit to a friends house, rather than an awkward visit just to see a tank.

That's not awkward at all. We do it all the time. The best way to start finding out what you want and how to do it is to ask here. Go back and edit your topic heading. Say "Reef aquariums in Logan?" and you will get several offers. Honestly, this is how we do it all the time.

Maybe we can find someone in Logan that has something that they can donate towards you getting started...then you have a better excuse to have your parents take you. Looking at tanks is more fun that you would think...even if you aren't into fish. |

Do you have a fresh water tank right now? If so we can take little steps to change it over (when you are ready.) It is going to take some time to cycle anyway. I did that with my freshwater tank and the $$$ wasn't too bad. Another thing to think about is how to pay to maintain the tank. Yes, you want live rock in a cycling tank. |

Don't be shy, anyone on this website would love to show you thier tank and tell you exactly how you should set-up your tank... But really these are great people and are very helpfull. If you are ever in Tooele you have a standing invitation to see our tanks. Hey bud. If your up for a drive you can come down and see mine. If you want a starter tank I have a couple in storage that I would gladly give you one to get you started. They are not drilled but for starting out it would be a great tank.

My tank is at my office so I don't think that would be too awkward to come see. That's why I have it. I also know that skimace's (Mason) tank is at his office and I'm sure he'd be glad to show you his tank as well. He works at Cache Title Company. If your parents are anything like mine were at your age, you'd be surprised what they will do to support your interests, especially ones that will keep you occupied and out of trouble..... Oops, the occupied part definitely, but the second you head to Dion's... here comes trouble  But in all seriousness I totally agree w/ everyone else. Go see some established tanks, and fins out what it takes to make them work. When I first got into Saltwater I saw a house with a really bright room and thought 'That has got to be a saltwater fish tank" and I knocked on their door and asked if I could see it. They were happy to show it off and explained that people use their house as a land mark when giving directions. "Turn at the house with the really bright front room." I would also suggest take people up on their offers for anything free. The price at the fish store might make your parents cringe... it can really add up. If you can get to Farmington go see Dion's tanks! They are awesome you will not be sorry...plus he's offered you a starter tank. |

The tank at Cache Title is very nice. It's just inside the front door in the waiting room. I've gone in and looked before with no other reason to be there. Someone will ask you if you're there to see someone, etc and just say you just came in to look at the tank and they're OK with it.
They're very nice at Body Balance. They might even give you some bottled water to drink. I need to come in and see the new tank too.
I have 2 used tanks and I would sell either to you and equipment too if you're interested (depending on your budget). Definitely shop around and do some research on what you want and what you need before making a decision on what to buy.
There's a 180 gallon reef I set up in Providence and I'm good friends with the family. They love showing it off. Just PM me if you want to see it. It's no inconvenience at all.

If you get down towards downtown SLC, you are welcome to see my tank and setup. I have a large system with multiple tanks plumbed into the same system. I am not in 9th grade, but I'm 23 years old, so maybe not as much of an age barrier. Feel free to stop on by. And if you do setup a tank, I will help you get corals in it, I will give you some to get you started.

Like your parents I was a little worried about meeting strangers from the net at first as most of the people on here seem to be male and I am female. However, everyone is really nice. For sure go see the tanks in public places they are always really nice.
I live in Logan and I have a brother in North Cache. My tank is not as fancy as the others but it works. I have had one fish in there for 7 years and the other for 6.
I like Aqutic Dreams and I have been doing busness there since they opened in their old location. However, I would look for used as you can save tons of money. This will help with your parents. I think someone offered you a free tank. I would take it.
Finally, I got my first fish tank when I was 15. My Dad was very supportive and my Mom tollerant. It has been a family hobby for us.

It's a good idea to make sure your parents are enthusiastic for the hobby. Especially if they are the ones forking over the $$$$. My wife agreed to the hobby because it was that or a dog and despite the expense of the hobby I know that a dog would've cost me more up to this point. They're are lots of neat things you can do with a tank and it can be quite the show piece for a home. Who doesn't like staring at beautiful fish and corals. I'd take up people on their offers of a free tank. Maybe it's not what you want in the end, but it will give you a feel for the hobby and then when you get a little more comfortable you can go big and just transfer the tank over.
