What is the general opinion about drilling a tank while in use? It was recommend to me to do it instead of using a HOB overflow that I built. I'm just concerned about the possible tragic ending!!!

It's been done, but it isn't without risk.

Properly set up, a HOB overflow can work just fine. Mark Peterson ran a HOB overflow successfully for years (as far as I know).

I ran a CPR overflow successfully for years as well. Important is to have a method to evacuate the air that will inevitably build up and break the syphon. Most overflows now available utilize a pump for this purpose.
