What exactly does Ozone do for a tank?

This is what I get from wikipedia....

Reduction potential (also known as redox potential, oxidation / reduction potential or ORP) is the tendency of a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_species - chemical species to acquire http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electron - electrons and thereby be http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redox - reduced . Each species has its own intrinsic reduction potential; the more positive the potential, the greater the species' affinity for electrons and tendency to be reduced.

In http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aqueous_solution - aqueous solutions , the reduction potential is the tendency of the solution to either gain or lose electrons when it is subject to change by introduction of a new species. A solution with a higher (more positive) reduction potential than the new species will have a tendency to gain electrons from the new species (i.e. to be reduced by oxidizing the new species) and a solution with a lower (more negative) reduction potential will have a tendency to lose electrons to the new species (i.e. to be oxidized by reducing the new species). Just as the transfer of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen - hydrogen ions between chemical species determines the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PH - pH of an aqueous solution, the transfer of electrons between chemical species determines the reduction potential of an aqueous solution. Like pH, the reduction potential represents an intensity factor. It does not characterize the capacity of the system for oxidation or reduction, in much the same way that pH does not characterize the buffering capacity.

Now does anyone else have more info? what is the desired level or ORP? and why?
What does it break down or add to?
Thanks - Nick

Those are excellent articles that I read before going to ozone.

Interestingly enough, when I put ozone on my tank, I monitored my ORP level for a week first, it was never over 300. I ran Ozone for about two weeks and my ORP came up to 380-420. Since then, my tank has equalized somehow and the ozone has not hardly come on at all and the ORP is 390-440.  I am wondering if I should calibrate my ORP probe/controller (apex)...they say its not really necessary since it is calibrated from factory, but I think I may do a calibration.

Terence, When useing ozone, you need to clean your probe at least once a week .  They get  dirty easy and always read high.  That is why your generator isn't coming on.
Just take a soft brush to it, like a tooth brush and gently clean it off.  Your reading will go down.  You dont need to calibrate it, just keep it clean.

Just cleaned it, its hovering around 310 now...thanks Brad! I know I need to clean my probes, but every week did not even occur to me.

If i can get this down right, Customers can bring in water for testing and i can smell or gargle the water sample and tell them there water par Clap

OK, you two, back on topic...

So, I have read different opinions on where you should set your ORP controller for your ozone. What do you do? I have mine set so that it fluctuates between 385 and 400 with the on off at 390 and 395 respectively (there is a small lag and overshoot).

When I'm running ozone, I set it to shut off at 405.
But to tell you the truth, I really haven't been useing it for about a year now.
I will hook it up every once in awhile, but not very often anymore. Same with my UV sterelizer, I just beleive that once your tank is mature enough, it has enough bacteria in it too handle the waste byproducts.
