This might sound like a dumb question, but  - should we quarantine micro algae.  I have just thrown it into my refugium; never even thought about it.

But now - I am thinking I would like to add some for a display tank.  I would also appreciate any suggested specimens.

thanks in advance

I believe the term is Macroalgae and that covers all the large ornamental marine algae. Do you quarantine anything else that enters your tank? And for what purpose?

A followup discussion would be - Can we keep all contaminated water from reaching our aquarium. And just what contamination are we expecting to stop?

Typically, macroalgae is received from others in this group. Caulerpa is the most common. The most likely problem would be Aiptasia anemones. They are easy to see in the source tank before the Caulerpa is collected and also easy to see after collection because they tend to open up quickly, even in a bag during transport. If you don't have any Aptasia now, it's best to decline that algae or cut off the frond with the Aiptasia.

Funny, but one of the easy ways to eliminate single Aiptasia is to place a small ball of Chaetomorpha over their  location. Let them crawl up onto the chaeto to get into the light and flow and then toss the chaeto ball.Smile
