I would like to hear some opinions on VHO bulbs versus 40 watt bulbs.  Are you getting anything else besides an extra 60 watts?  Or is a VHO bulb just the same as a normal bulb but at a higher watt?

I was using 4 40watt NO bulbs for awhile on my 75 gallon tank.  It does provide a minimal amount of light, but not near the intensity you need to grow much more than your extremely low light corals and plants.  I now have 4 36" VHO bulbs and I can tell you that there is a huge difference in the overall amount of corals and plant life it can support.

If you are talking about using NO bulbs with a VHO balast.  The IceCap VHO balast supposibly will work with the NO bulbs, but it will be at a lower intensity level.  They typically run about 10-20% less intense than the VHO bulbs.

Also the VHO bulbs look almost identical to the No bulbs.
