so I don't know how big our server is..or how hard this would be to do...but I would LOVE having an instant messenger on here so we could keep in touch at a quicker pace than PM's and it also wouldn't fill our mailboxes...

just an idea..Clap

We have talked about this in the past.  If you click on a users name you can currently IM that person with the few programs listed under their profile, assuming they have set them up.

We can talk about this again, but programming this would be a major undertaking unless we can find a solution we can build off of.  Does anybody know of a site that has IM built in (besides Facebook).

I have implemented a "chat room" on another website I run, but it is rarely used.  We could also talk about doing something like that (we have discussed this in the past as well).

I signed up simply for all the "free knowledge" that all the members shared with me!  That's well worth 2 dollars a month.

The Presidency discussed this last night.
This was tough.  Unfortunately we didn't come to a final conclusion on this.  It has come up a few times in the past.  The reason it wasn't implemented before is because
1) we're possibly too large to make it work... imagine an open chat with 8 conversations going on at once.  Small clubs with 6 people could do it, but when you have 20 people online all the time it could be a mess.
2) would it take away from the forum posts?  Meaning would people just type their question in the chat forum "hey how can you sex a flame angel" instead of using the forum topics.
3) would it be tied to the username list, meaning you'd make a post and it would show your name... or would it be an open chat.
4) is an IM system better than a chat room?

This is something we may just try out.  Maybe give it a whirl and see what happens.   If it works great we leave it, and if not we take it down.  No clear answer on this.

I have windows live messanger :) If anyone wants to chat with me through that I am game. Why do we need a dedicated IM? There are a billion out there already. A chat room might be fun though.

I came on to suggest (again) a chat room...But found this thread.

I don't see a need for an IM style chat...but an actual chat room would be cool.  Yes, it might take away from some of the posts.  But, not everyone has the time to hang in a chat room.  So there would still be posts.

As for the number of people on a time.  I don't think that will be an issue.  In fact, the more on, the better it will be.  Otherwise people will just join a "silent" room.
