I wanted to start one of these threads here. Chalices have become one of my favorite corals. There are so many different morphs, it just blows me away. I wanted to see what people have here locally, so show them off! Here are a few of mine.
No Name (yet)
LE Paradise
Blue Sherbert
LE Purple With Neon Yellow Eyes
Strawberry Patch

Jared your chalices are gorgeous! Let me know when you frag them and I will try to get some from you.
I just got my first chalice about 2 weeks ago and absolutely love it. Mine is a bright red/orange. I am not sure how to tell if chalices are happy. I have moved it several times because of rearranging my tank. It still has it's color so I assume it is happy. I would take a pic but my camera sucks and I can't get good texture or color to show.

Jerry don't die holding your breath! My flake neighbor said he would be over but never showed up the other day. If you go to The Aquarium they have them there.

I used to use a dremmel to frag chalices, but recently invested in a wet band saw with a diamond blade. It rocks! It is important to do an iodine dip after you frag to prevent any infection.

It is similar to the reverse watermelons, but it isn't one of the big named ones. I actually got that piece from Bruce about 2 years ago. I almost lost the colony a while back, but it has recovered nicely.

I am curious as tho the growth rate on these "chalices". I love the color and the texture, but I have yet to see any big specimens, and most seem to be ultra-closeup shots of them on frag disks. How big will they get and how fast? Any photos of some big ones with something in the picture to understand the scale?

So that looks to be about 3-4" across. How long would it take typically to spread from these tiny frags I see most of the time to something of that size? Are we talking 9, 12, 18 months, more?

That piece is actually 6-7" accross. I can't remember how long it took to grow. It is EagleEyez5,s chalice and he should have growth shots.

I too have caught the chalice bug.
First three photos started as small frags and have grown out quite nicely.
Kissed by my orange crush acans (I believe- never good with names). Never enough room- regardless of tank size.
Both pieces have about quadrupuled in size.
Reached out and touched by a large frogspawn- (now gone) but is recovering.
So much more colorful in person
Started as one eye.
My newest addition.

No, not sick at all. Those spots were probably damage at one point, but everything is happy and healed up now. If it were fresh, the skeleton would be white.

Isn't it fascinating how light plays with the color, bright sunlight compared to fluorescent lights.
and then a closer shot. I was fascinated how this 1" piece grew to almost 5" in less than a year and started to extend out as a plate toward the sunlight.
I was told by the person who now has this Blue Chalice that it has 1" sweeper/feeder tentacles. Has anyone else noticed this in their Chalice?

The frag was given to me by a hobbyist here in St. George. I don't remember whether he told me but he may have bought it directly from Steve Tyree when he came here 4 or 5 years ago to do a show at Tracy's store, Living Art Aquariums.

Is there anyone that frags these and sells to club members for a decent price? I would like to try 1 or 2 cheap pieces in my tank to see how they do. before i spend a grand on colonies.
Also:
1. How fast do they grow on an average?
2. Can they be placed on the sand? Have seen lots in pic's on sand.
3. Any special requirements (food, flow, light spacing from other corals)
Thanks for your help in advance!

Most of them are slow growers, I never feed them but some do, maybe that's why mine are slow growers.
You can place them in the sand or on rocks, but they usually dont like bright light. Medium flow and light.
The real nice ones cost an arm and a leg, your best bet is to find a wild one and hope they color up, or else spend 3-500 dollars for a 1/2 inch frag on a plug.

Brad, it varies with all of them. The one above grows quite well for me. Others say it hardly grows at all. I place them on the sand bed and don't ever feed them. You can spot feed them which helps the growth a little bit.

I've read through this thread, and had several questions that have been answered... I still have one about lighting. It was said they don't like bright light, but has anyone grown them under t5 lighting in say.. A Red Sea Max? Or how about the lighting in an Oceanic Biocube? I'd love to catch the chalice bug, but would hate to not have adequate lighting for one/some.
My Zooanthids go nuts in my red sea max, I've had one go from about 10 polyps to over 200 in less than a year, but I just wanted to ask if these would stand a chance in my tank before I drop an arm and a leg on something that can die in a couple days.
Lights are 10k compact t5's.

Im pretty sure the lighting in your tank would be plenty. Biocube with just PCs im not so sure, but probably still possible. Chalices are an LPS coral so not super intensive care like SPS.
Everyones stuff is looking really good.
