Subject: What picture size works best for you?

What size pictures work the best for you? Most of my photographs are much larger than what I post here. With the popularity of wide  screen displays and lower cost monitors I was wondering what worked best for people when viewing the message board.

Thanks for the help.

All of my pics that I send to photobucket are automatically resized to 1024x768 pixels to fit a 17 inch screen.

For imbedded pictures in posts I think anything over 800 px wide is too big.  I have fairly large screens, but I seldom if ever have Explorer maximized on the screen.  It's usually just a window, among many, on the screen.  800 px fits my windows nicely.

I voted 900 because larger than that I get the sliders that you have to scroll up / down or sideways to see the whole photo

That is exactly my point. I don't like to get the sliders and have to scroll left and right.

Thanks for the input everyone. I hope to get more input before I talk to Jonathan about modifying his picture uploading utility.

I have a 15" screen and the 900 works great.  The 1000 has the slidey thingys.

I like 800... I scale all of mine at 650 though, usually I can get higher resolution if their smaller...

Steve,

If you are seeing red in that picture then maybe your monitor needs to be calibrated. There is orange or orangish brown but no red on my monitor.

My PC screen is huge and any would fit, but the 900 fills the laptop screen, any larger and I get scrollers.

I don't care for the scrollers either. For one the width of the picture dictates the length of the word wrap in the window and it is tough to read the text.

I know this is an old post....  I love evrything about this site except the scolling of the pictures within the posts. For me the photos are very valuable!  You can learn alot just from a photo.  If it was possible to reduce the photo size and remove the scolling feature?  This would be awesome in my opinion.  For example when you are looking at the aquaruim of the month, you have to scroll to see the whole photo.  I think it would be awesome to be able to see the whole shot in one clean sweep.  Smile  I hope my opion does not offend anyone and if it does I am sorry.  I'm just offering my opinion as to what I think would make the site it's best...again just my 2 cents worth.

From the poll we decided 900 pixels in the longest direction was a good suggested size. 22 people voted for 900 pixels and larger where as 13 voted for smaller than 900 pixels. Not everybody adheres to this but I think most people do. I hope this can work for you.

It works for me.  Will we still need to scroll to view an entire picture if we adhere to the 900 pixel size?

It just depends on your monitor size and resolution. This picture is 900 X 900 pixels.

Wow way to bring back this post... I must have missed it the first time around.
I like 800 if the pic "needs" to be big.  Full tank shots for example.  But an 800x800 pic of a zoo polyp for sale is going to mean nothing to me almost makes me not want to buy it, as I know it won't look like that to the naked eye. If it interests me though, I size it down to actual polyp size to see if I still like it. Though they sure do look nice up close.

Ive been curious what mine would look like zoomed in that far.  If the guy we know with the awesome photo skills can make it over this weekend, I should have nice close-ups of my zoos soon after.
