I have a toadstool leather in my nano that has not extended its polyps in a few days.  It is under a 24w bulb and was sitting at the bottom of the tank until today when I moved it closer to the lights.  My xenia and kenya in the same tank are doing great.  Any suggestions would be great.  I am thinking maybe not enough light but not sure.  my params are all within range.  the only one that is slightly off is nitrates are slightly above zero.  i want some suggestions before I put him in the tank with better lighting.

How long in the tank?
Sarcophyton do this from time to time, eventually sloughing off a mucous layer and coming back out as good as new.

He has been in there a month now.  Doing great for the past three weeks.  The first week he acted like this to.  Had a traumatizing trip to the house.

It is not unusual for a leather, especially a Toadstool.

Of course the day after I ask it is fine again.  thanks for your help everyone.  So should I expect this as a monthly thing or every once in a while?

it is usually when it is about to go through some growth.

I think every once in a while describes it pretty well.

I agree with Mike; I don't think three is any kind of "pattern" to it...

I have 3 different Sarcophyton spp corals in my tank and some days all 3 are out open and looking great; some days 1 is looking "pissy" but the other 2 are fine; some days 2 bad, 1 good; occasionally all 3 look annoyed... but I have never been able to pin down a specific "cause" or "causes" other then they will definitely "shrivel up" if you touch or move them...

I had a very large sinularia do this "regularly".  My thought is that the coral is using this method to slough off algae, detritus, sand or whatever may be accumulating on its tissue.

Hermit crabs would go crazy for the stuff in my tank. Some fish would even consume it from time to time. The larger the coral, the longer it would last, sometime for up to 3 days.

I would consider it normal. Good luck.
