Just bought a sun coral from bird world and was wondering if anyone had any pointers for me.  I just fed it after acclimation and it ate up and seems to be doing great.  I have just heard about people having a hard time and was looking for any tricks you may have.

Put it on the bottom of your tank so that it doesn't get too much light. Feed it at the same time everyday.  It will get "trained" and will open at that time everyday. I target feed mine a mixture of mysis and brine shrimp.  Good luck and let me know if you have anymore questions.

I just realized I probably put this in the wrong place.  But I have been feeding in the morning every day and have been worried because they were not eating but today it extended out about the time I have been feeding it and it was ready to eat.  I am going to do this schedule every day for two weeks before I cut it back to every other dayish.  I want to make sure it is trained so I do not have problems feedind it.

I feed my suncorals a cube a night. They are pigs, and split like crazy. I am not home during the day at a reliable time, so I feed after the lights go out. They are always open and ready to take it

I've been having some problems with mine and will say from experience, don't let these guys go too long without food. I traded a Trach for beautiful sun coral colony and I didn't get a chance to feed it as often as I wanted too and I lost 2 polyps completely and 6 or so are on deaths door. I took it out of my parents tank and it's now in my nano where I can find the time too nurse it back to health. These are defiantly finicky corals and not for beginners or people without allot of time on there hands (I fall into both those categories).

A tip for feeding- place a clear plastic bottle over your sun coral. Use a turkey baster to feed and the bottle will help keep the food localized and a few blast with the turkey baster every few minutes will mix the food up for the polyps to catch.

To "scare you straight"
Before I got my hands on it:

After-

So be on the ball about these guys, I would know.

i really wouldnt say they are hard to care for you just need to make sure to feed them dont let them go more than about 2 days without feeding if you do that you are usually ok in my experience.

I have a small colony of black suncoral. When we first got it, we spot fed it mysis about every other day. Now I can't even remember the last time we spot fed it... But every night once the metal hallides go out, the polyps come out. And most of the time the polyps come out in the morning before the hallides go on, as well. But we do feed a mix of foods, and somewhat heavily.

Here's my old thread on sun corals - I would say a trick would try to get the sun corals to the point of eating krill:

Hey thanks for that.  i will have to buy some and try it.  Mine are trained now and come out during the day so I em excited about that.  They seem to eat regularly but it would be nice if I did not have to worrie about it as often.
