I have a 26 bowfront to set up at home, I'm debating cutting out the center brace that runs across the top.

Any opinions/experience with small bowfronts and the center brace?

Scary. . . . I would not do it. . . but 26gals isn't a big deal right if it lands on the floor. LOL

Ya gotta think that they put that thing there for a reason...

But I agree with Amy!  26 gallons on the floor is nothing!

Why cut it out?

lighting issue--to keep from having a large shadow in the middle.

LOL. I think if it didnt need it, they would not put it there. It costs them extra to put it there, so why would they unless it was not necessary?

For a 26 gallon tank, I'd personally chance it. I hate center braces. For a big tank, no way unless it was built like that (like my new tank).

What I would do, and it should work fine as I have done it with other tanks, is cut out the center brace and replace it with a piece of glass and silicone the glass into place.

Replace it either with Glass as Rdbrown days, or cut it and leave tabs to bolt in a clear acrylic brace to replace it.

I'm thinking about trimming it down to around 1/2 wide, instead of cutting it out, especially since it's like 2" wide right now.

I just cut out the center brace on my 65g. I replaced it with clear acrylic and secured it with nylon bolts/nuts. I was having the same issue with a large shadow down the middle.
