The rumors of its extinction in the wild are very much exagerrated but I'll sell you a frag for $40Smile And it's actually Sinularia not Nepthea.

Here's a pic of what I have. It's the greenest one. http://www.utahreefs.com/ReefTour2002/pages/DSC01261.htm - http://www.utahreefs.com/ReefTour2002/pages/DSC01261.htm

nepthea

Rare Palau Nepthea
Known only in captivity, this
coral is said to be extinct.
Frags will come in about 1",
but open up to 2 inches.

also this wason that page...

Sinularia corals can be identified by the fact that the growth originates from a single heavy stalk unlike Nepthea and the polyps are less feathery than in colt corals.

It's very difficult even for a pro to identify octocoral by picture alone and I'm certainly no expert but this has been discussed ad nauseum here.  The coral in the picture from Atlantis aquarium and labeled "Rare Palau Nepthea" looks (and has the same background story) as the "green nephthea" coral that is in almost everyone's tank here in utah.  But it's almost certainly not nephthea.  Nephthea has non-retractile autozooid polyps and has no polyps on the main stalk.  You can tell from the Atlantis aquarium picture that that coral has polyps on the stalk and has fully retractile polyps.  I think both Adam Cesnales and Eric B thought it was Sinularia.

Whatever it is, it's very plentiful in SLC and it's a very beautiful coral.

well if jon is right you have sinularia since your polyps retracted. I'm no coral ID expert for sure!

Nephthia polyps are non-retractile like xenia.  They can bunch up, but they don't pull into the mouth of the polyp like the coral in your pics.  All my books are still packed away, but I'm sure Borneman covers this in his Coral book.

Here's a very good on-line Octocoral taxonomy guide:

Here's a picture of a coral that was sold to me as Lemnalia (but I doubt it's Lemnalia, my money's on sinularia too.  It looks and feels very similar to the "green nephthia" only mine had white polyps where the "green nephthia" has green) showing both fully open polyps and fully retractile polyps:

(hmm, I guess I can't upload pictures...)

I also have the same looking nepthia. I haven't really noticed the polyps retract into a "mouth" per say, but they do fold into themselves when the coral recedes or shrinks. maybe it's just a misunderstanding on what "polyp retraction" is defined as.??

neither of them are extinct. it's an unfounded rumor that has been used to increase the value of the ordinary coral. It's an all too common marketing ploy. Sorry Crystal. I was only kidding about $40. I'll give you a frag.

The stuff we used to call Green Nepthea was correctly id'd as Sinularia a few years ago by our club guests as Jon stated above.

There was a guy on here that actually had green nepthea (not the common green sinularia that is in the club) and sold it for 50 bucks per inch frag.
