Jpndave's Cube
Ok, I finally decided to add a few shots of the tank. I have the rock placed but am not totally sure that the layout is "right".  The four base corners have to stay where they are but the others could be shifted to make things look/function better.  I would appreciate any and all feedback (positive and constructive criticism).
The tank is a 21" Acrylic cube.  36 gallons in the tank and 15 or so running volume in the sump below.  There are no cord or plumbing exposed anywhere except for a single power cord to plug into the wall.  A single Lumenarc reflector with a 175W 15K Iwasaki bulb fired by Icecap ballast.  Two 1" drains are set up on the "Herbie Method" which works very well.  Return from the sump is through a Eheim 1260 and a modified SCWD with the two eductors/flow increasers (and yes, they work!).  Additional flow is from a modded 6025 Tunze Nanosteam hidden below the center flat rock (straight behind the tricolor) and centered in the tank in one of Tunze's Nanorocks for the Nanosteam.  It is modded as well.  Should be about 900gph.
Right now the skimmer is an urchin.  I am in process of upgrading to a custom acrylic recirc design with the mesh and an Aquaclear 70 with a custom impellor housing.  I'll add pics of all this and the livestock later.
The sump is lit by a 70W 14K Ushio halide over the frag section and a 27W fluorescent over the Chaeto.
Live rock is from Haiti (my wife was born there while her parents were abroad).  I love the density and shape.  Between the sump and tank there is 80lbs.  Sand is Utah Aragonite.  I am thinking of adding a layer of coarser sand to try and minimize sandstorms from the eductors.  I am also going to add 90 Degree elbows on both sides of the sump return to get the outlets tighter to the wall and down a bit.
Occupants include:
*    Two Picasso Perculas - sweet friendly and most important stunning!
*    One Pearly Jawfish "Boogly Boogly" as Amy and the kids named him.  Right side under the front rock.
*    Two Yashia Gobies (mated pair) and Randalli Pistol shrimp Front and center - these are fun to watch
*    Two Mandarins, One Red Male & One Green Female.  The red is really cool.
*    Tail Spot Blenny - awesome personality!  He is my favorite fish in the tank!
*    Two Cleaner Shrimp
*    Lawnmower Blenny - still not sure if this guy is staying.

I plan to add a Helfrichi Firefish

The tank looks good Dave.  I like the rockwork as is.  Once the SPS grow out, it's gonna look spectacular.

Your tank bottom is even worse than mine, LOL.  Have frags much?????  I love the branching duncan and christmass worms.

It looks like your water has a lot of floating particles in it.  What you can do to help is to put some filter floss in your overflow.  One night is usually enough to polish your water that way.  You can just then throw the floss away.

Is that a nudibrach egg pod on the tank wall?

I have filter bags on the lines to the sump but I will try the floss in the overflow.  Thanks for the tip.

The branching duncan is sprouting new heads.  With any luck you will have a frag of it in now time.Wink

The Christmas tree worm really is an awesome piece.  I got it from c4cache when they tore down their tank.   I had it in the back but moved it up a bit and it really has opened up.  I'll post some close ups later tonight.

The egg pods all 3 of them are from the ceriths.  I did have one from the nasty little nudibranch but I got rid of it. So far I have kill two of the nasty little devils but I think there is at least one more as I noticed some damage to one of my zoas today so I will dip everything again.  I'll get them!Angry

Thanks!  I appreciate your input.  No changes to the rockwork?  I don't know if I am totally satisfied and ready to glue it down yet.  Getting close though.  I need to at least ad a piece below the bleached GBTA (Came that way but is coloring back up).

Your tank bottom is even worse than mine, LOL.  Have frags much?????

LOL, ya, and that is after thinning things down by sending some pieces to a friends new nano and putting some pieces in the frag section of the sump.  You should have seen it before!  I would love some advice on where to locate everything.  I am paranoid to glue anything down.  It was a huge step for me to let that clam put it's foot down on the rock to the right.  I'm still not sure that is where I want it.  The only things I am sure about and happy with where they are is the Jawfish and Yashia.

It looks good.  I like.  What is that thing with a ton of holes in it in the last pic?  My tank bottom is just like yours.  I have frags everywhere on my sand bed.

Sweet!  I love cubes.  I really want to get a nice sized cube for my office at work... but I should probably finish up with my 125 before I start out on any new projects :)  As for your questions, I like the rock, it allows for lots of swimming room in the front and looks good to me!

Thanks for the comments.  I am in the same boat with new projects except I am planning a 180 and have the cube to finish first, LOL.  My has threatened me no new projects until this tank, the jeep, harley, house and yard are finished!  I might get away with the 180 before finishing the canoe but we'll see.

I have tried to pick fish that will use different parts of the tank to make things balanced and everyone happy.

I'm not positive what you are refering to but if it is the yellow rock in the bottom center, it is the Christmas Tree Rock.

The first isn't a great picture but it is a nice piece.  From Jared Butler.

This piece is cool because of the fan worm in the upper left corner.  It looks like a skeleton hand reaching out to grab things.

you have to quite.  the more pics of those duncans the sicker I get.  I need some of those so bad.  Your tank and corals look awsome.  I like the christmas tree rock as well.  One of the nicer rocks I have ever seen.  Does the coral that encrusts the rock polyp out much?

It may change as it grows out.  It already has a bunch since i got it.  It was a rim piece so the colors should change and intensify as it grows.  All I can do is wait and see.

The pipe organ is about out of room to grow on the rock it is on.  I may have to frag it.Big%20smile  That is a first for me!

Thank Mike and Dinhkim.  I am really growing attached to that rock.  I moved it up closer to the front and enjoy being able to see it better.  Everything seems to like the incresed light too.  There sure are a varied bunch of colors.  I would have thought they would all be similar.  The macro shots show way more detail that you can see in person.  I think I'll keep the rock.  I read in Borneman's coral book that they like a lot of light.  Anyone know any more about that?

Armor of God from Jared Butler

Spiderman from Jared (and Jared, if you read this, the center is really turning an intense blue, even better than this photo):

It looks like some kind of clam.  The back side follows the contours of the rock and is attached to the rock.  It does open an close like a clam and is sensitive to light changes.  It will close up if something changes the light.  It doesn't move from where it is but does open and close.  It is actually a very pretty pearly white color with the black spots.   I would guess some kind of clam but I'm not sure what kind or where to look to find out.  It is not in my Calfo "Reef Invertebrates" book that I could find.

Looking really good Dave. Glad to see the the frags you got from me are doing well. Did you loose the Garf Bonsai? If you did, I'll hook you up with another frag. That one is a must have.

Posted By: jpndave
Date Posted: January 27 2008 at 5:06pm
The jury is still out on the Bonsai.  I fragged and dipped.  The base is gone.  I have a small part of the tip that hasn't completely rtn yet.  Fingers crossed.  It is by far my favorite acropora.  Like you said, it is a must have.  I would love another frag of "armegeddon" and the "sunset monti" if you have any.  They didn't make it either.  I need to come visit you again to get a few more frags....  Any suggestions?Big%20smile  I am really liking the sps much more now.  I'll keep a few of the really high end zoas and the other special pieces but want to get more of the acros and montis.

The spidermans are really coloring up nicely now under better lighting.  I think I need to add actinics to really get that acan of yours I got a frag fest to "pop".  I'll post some pics of it.

Do you think the tail spot blenn will do ok with the other occupants of the tank?  Pearly Jawfish, Yasha goby/pistol, Green Mandarin, Helfrichi, True perc Clownfish pair?

Posted By: jbutler
Date Posted: January 27 2008 at 5:29pm
Dave,
I hope the Bonsai makes it as well. If not, no big deal. I've got another frag for you. I've also got some more armageddons. My sunset colony went south on me, but I was able to save a nice sized frag of it. It may be a while before it's ready, but I'll put you first on the list.   I do have some rainbow montipora that I think you'd like.
The tail spot would be a great addition to your tank. They've got a ton of personality and should get along well with your other tank mates.

The Tailspot Blenny is one of my favorites! My Percula clowns got territorial in my 34g cube and killed him though. The clowns are now gone so I need to get another one.

I got a piece of what I thought was "Pokerstar" from you.  There is a picture of it here in this thread.  Is this the same coral as the rainbow or do you have both?

I think I will get a Tail Spot.  Where did you get yours?  I asked for one in several of the LFS and just got puzzled looks.  Also, where do they typically "Hang Out" in the tank.  I am trying to plan this out so everyone has their own territory/space.  The Jawfish-bottom right front, Yasha-bottom left front, Mandarin-hovering over/in live rock, Helfrichi upper front, clowns, upper back.  That was the general idea anyway.

Ya, that is what has me worried.  I remember reading that on Jared's thread.  I am a little concerned.  Maybe if I put the Blenny in first then get some really small Percs, everyone will get along?  All of the fish I am putting in here are pretty passive aren't they?  The percs would probably be the most aggressive.

Posted By: Mike Savage

Mine got along fine for a month or so then all at once the Perculas got territorial. I had them for about 2 1/2 years with no problems. After the first two days my Tailspot was always out in the open and seldom on the sand. Frequently he was in the middle to top of the tank.

Ya, I saw the picture of the pokerstar. Looks like it's doing really well. The pokerstar will develope orange polyps with the new growth. The rainbow is different. It has orange, yellow and green polyps and the body is a deeper blue. I recently took out most of my sps colonies from my tank. I'm getting ready to redo it. I still have a bunch that I kept though. One that comes to mind is the Shawn Bennett yellow tort. I think you'd like that one. You'll have to come visit again sometime soon!

Two more just for fun.  Sorry for the crappy pics, my good camera fell off of my desk.Angry  I don't know if I can justify repairing it.  Any suggestions for a very good point and shoot?  I will probably have to go that route for a bit until I can afford the Nikon DSLR I want.  (thinking about he D40X).  Does anyone have any input for either of these?

What lense (or lenses) do you use.  I was thinking of starting with the 18-200 or 18-250 zoom and then getting a dedicated macro lense for tank shots.  What is your experience with lenses?  Which lenses do you use?

I am looking at these lenses:

I was thinking of getting one of these to get by.  Is there a better choice in a point and shoot?

Dave,

For taking pictures of the family I like the 18-55mm lens. The one that comes with the camera is pretty darn good. For taking pictures of the tank I mostly use a Sigma 150 Macro.

That is a way cool shot. I shoot with the Canon Rebel but would like to upgrade to the Canon 20d or the more expensive 5d.
Some picts I have posted are at: http://www.utahreefs.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=23399 - http://www.utahreefs.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=23399

I dig the tank, especially the Christmas rock, it is just stunning.
How do a fish and a shrimp pair up?

WOW!  That is a nice shot Mike!  I'll have to look into that lens.  Is your camera the D40 or D40X?  I have been doing some reading and what I am finding is that the D40 is a better camera than any up until the D200.  Interesting, I have been dreaming of owning a D80 and it sounds like I would be happier with a D50 at like, half the price.  I broke the news to the wife today.  Now, just need to get a house sold!

I am still in a dillema over my C5050.  I have really liked that camera and it takes great pictures for a point and shoot.  I have a Nikon N80 film camera and I really thing the C5050 takes better pictures.  I just don't think I can justify the $200 repair bill on a 6 year old camera.  The Nikon Coolpix P50 is $157 shipped on Amazon right now.  I may just get that one for now and then the D50X in a few months.  Have you heard anything about the P50, or is there a better choice?

ThanksEmbarrassed  The Christmas tree rock is one of my favorite pieces now.  My favorite corals are PPE, GARF Bonsai, Christmas tree rock.  I really like Yasha and my True Red BTA.  Yasha is almost never out and I don't know what that crazy anemone is doing.  It can't seem to decide whether to live or die.  It has been contracted on a rock for months.  I thought it would have died by now but it just sits there, ocassionally moving but never opening up.

The Yasha and Pistol should just get together and share a burrow.  I'm not sure where the pistol is.  It went MIA a week ago or so.  I have seen it once since I put it in the tank.  There is an article that mentioned putting the shrimp into the tank with a piece of pvc pipe already there as a starting point for the shrimps home.  I did that but when putting in the shrimp, it slipped out of the container before I could get it over the pvc.  I'm not quite sure what to do to find it now.  Anyone have any suggestions?  Yasha is still fine but spends almost all of it's time in hiding.  It sneaks a pod here and there and will usually come out when I feed microcrabs to grab a piece here and there and seems healthy otherwise.  I would really like to get those two paired up where I can see them a little better.  Any way to find that crazy shrimp or do I assume it is gone?

Dave,

Mine is the D40. I see no need for 10 megapixels and needed the faster flash synch.

What is the difference in the flash sync?  I was unaware of that difference.  I thought the only difference was in the capture mechanism ie, 6 vs 10 megapixels?  The online prices I have seen aren't that far apart anymore.  I am leaning towards a D40X (or the D40) body, Nikon 18-200 lens, and when I can afford it a macro lens and flash.

The last group of pictures was taken with a D50.  My mother came out and had to snap a couple hundred pics.  Mostly of the grandkids but the tank got a few too.

Hey did you buy all those Zoa frags from reefkingom.com?  If so, how was shipping and packaging on them. They all look sweet. And that Blue n white jawfish is something special

also it says that the AoG zoas are per polyp, did you order one and they sent you a couple or did you order all three?

The flash sync speed on the D40X is 1/200 and on the D40 is 1/500. For 99% of the people it makes no difference. I need the 1/500 sync for photographing coral fluorescence.

That is a bit of a difference Mike.  I will have to do some more research.  How does the sync speed affect photos?

They have grown a bit since I purchased them, there are way more than three polyps there now.  Not all of the zoas/palys came from reefkingdom.  Jared Butler is who you need to get in touch with.  He goes by "jbutler" and was on the forum when I logged on to post this.  Just pm him.  About half of what I have came from him.  I am going to pick up a bunch more stuff from him soon.  He is REALLY GREAT to work with and you will have no problems at all with him.   I have purchased from him several times and plan to again as often as I can.

I borrowed my Dad's camera to get a few acceptable shots, a Canon Powershot SD550.

Spiderman from Jared Butler:

Ponape Bird Nest

Orange Acan - this thing started out baby puke brown but has colored up nicely

Green Acan - this little guy is my favorite acan.  It has come back from the dead, just a spec of flesh that couldn't even be seen.

Acan from Frag Fest - this was donated by Jared Butler and was one of the auction corals.  It is starting to color up.

Branching Duncan - these grow really well for me.  This one is sprouting like a dozen heads and they are growing out in the branching pattern.  I may have to frag this guy before too long.

Garf Bonsai - This guy is my favorite acro.  I almost lost it to rtn after the tank move but through much effort and fragging have saved this piece.  It is starting to encrust the base.  Big%20smile which makes me very happy.  The branch to the right was actually separated by a bare spot and has grown into the main piece.  The color is still bleached from the move to halides.  I am finding that this lighting is brighter than most anything else out there.  I have problems with all the pieces as them come into the tank even from 400W systems.  The acros seem to love it once they adjust.  My tricolor is now more like a quad color (brown base, purple through almost all the body now, white tips and a burgandy red color can be seen just below the tips, quite amazing really)

Bad pic of the tricolor but shows colors a little bit.  For some reason this piece is really hard to photograph.  (Sorry about the cord, all the other photos looked worse than this one!)

Christmas Tree rock - Does anyone know what the red pipe looking growths are by some of the worms?  It has a stringy discharge out of the top at times.  Notice the green color of the Favites coral and the polyp extension.  I love this piece!

Aussie Elegance Coral - I hope this pretty lady makes it but I don't have a lot of hope at this point.  The guy I purchased this from sent her overnight but missed the deadline so she was in transit for almost 2 days and he taped the air holes on the heat pack closed so she came in a bit cold.  Fingers crossed!Disapprove

The red pipe looking growths are vermetid snails.

Those Spiderman zoas are awesome! I may have to get some of those myself!

Thanks for posting these pictures. You really have some gorgeous corals.

Are the vermetid snails good or bad?  I don't like their mucous strings at all.  Can I just cut/break them off of the rock?  Any natural preditors?

And thanks for the compliments mike.  The spidermans took a bit to get the color but they are really starting to look nice.  The blue really "pops" in person.  If you don't get some from Jared, I'll hook you up with a frag after they grow out a bit.

Is this an amphipod, I have a lot of them but this guy looks like a mini mantis with his pincers or whatever you would call them?  Good or bad?

This looks to be some kind of snail.  Motors all over the place.  Stomatella?  Looks like a good guy, seems to eat algae.

Posted By: Mike Savage
Date Posted: February 19 2008 at 7:27pm

Yes that is an amphipod and the next is indeed a stomatella!

Vermetid snails are usually fine but sometimes they can very quickly overpopulate in a system. Some hermit crabs eat them and can keep them in check.

That's cool about the frag of Spiderman Zoas. I hope they grow fast!

Looking really good Dave.  Things are coming along nicely.  Glad to see the Bonsai back in action.  Lets see a pic of the reverse sunset monti!  On the Aussie Acans, I've found that you get much better color with less light.  Maybe try moving them into more of a shaded area that still has good flow.

Reverse sunset picture soon.  It bleached a bit from shipping but is coming back fast.  Beautiful piece but different growth pattern than the regular sunset.  Simply glows under actinics.

Here is the Roab Digi.  It is getting that green base color which makes me very happy.  I love the growth form this guy takes too.  Sorry for the crappy pics, this camera bites!
