Why don't we get a section on this board that is called tank of the month. The way it works is one tank out of the membership is selected from the group that wants to participate. The member and the tank is show cased. This site should include stuff about the member and information about their tank. What do you all think.

Also, I don't want this to be a contest, not at all. I thought it would be nice to see other peoples tanks. This would give us more detailed information, than just on the reef tour.

Most boards have them and they are great (reef central and nano-reef) I think it would be great to have one here so we can know what each other has, so we can learn from their experience and get ideas for our own tanks.
And I agree about the not being a contest, each person has their own view of what a reef tank should look like... They all look great to me if the inhabitants are healthy and happy.

This idea sounds great as long as we can get a person each month to take the time to get pictures and information about a tank each month. Adam and I, (especially Adam) stay busy just running the Society and would have little time to head up a Tank of the Month section.
I will volunteer my time to post the info about the tank of the month, but someone else would have to work out the logistics of making this happen.
Any volunteers?

What if someone volunteered pictures and information on their own tank. Then got the info and pictures to Jake.
This is where it could get fun. The person who does it, gets to randomly pick the next person to do the same and so on.
If someone doesn't want to do it when picked then someone else is asked.
Just an idea. I would be willing to start things off.

Steve,
You are up. Please have pics and info to Jake during the next couple weeks. Should be enough time for Jake to get info on line. We'll try to go for Tank of the Month for March. I'll make a short announcement regarding this during the March meeting (CORAL CUTTING).
Just so everyone knows, the presidency has debated this topic many times. The difficulty being "who is going to get the pictures, the info, and make sure it happens" I like Steve's idea of one person picking the next person. Maybe that will work. Worth a try.
(Steve- I highly recommend you pick John Fletcher for the following month, since he started this idea)

This could be an opportunity to expand the WMAS presidency. We have a great president, vice president/web site guru, administrator (I don't know if that's the official title, sorry Steve), and librarian. (I'm not sure of others, if there are, I apologize for leaving you out.)
Any way, this new person could be the club historian (or what ever), in charge of Tank of the Month (TotM) pictures and information as well as pictures from meetings, social events, or other WMAS activities. They would track who's tank has been shown and when, as well as preparing for future months. They would decide what things are always shown in the TotM (e.g. canopy, front & side view, sump/refugia) and what information should be gathered at the TotM interview (e.g. how long up and running, how long in current state, water specifics, inhabitants, what the spouse/significant others has to say about it)
There could be a lot of work involved, or something that is slapped together in a rush to get it out there for the members. I personally love my tank, and love to talk with others about it even though it's not very old and I'm still a neophyte. Those I've talked with feel the same way and wouldn't want their TotM to be any less special than that of another.
I'm not sure how the presidency members are selected, but I would imagine if this position was something the society could use then volunteers would be called for and a person selected by the existing presidency. I for one would love to do this every month. Besides getting me more involved with the hobby, it would be the Reef Tour at a more leisurely pace. What an opportunity!!
Just my 2 worth.

I think it's a terrific idea. From reading your post I think you would be perfect for the job. Elections are coming up soon. Like you I don't know how the positions in the presidency are derived.
Since the tank of the month is no longer just an idea, I think the need and appreciation for someone in this position would be great.

First time I have participated but here goes! I have appreciated the open forum without having to participate activly, and we have learned so much that we finally felt guilty about not doing so.
I first have to start by saying thanks to John Fletcher who is a great guy: When I first became interested in the marine aquarium hobby I went to a local Marine Fish Store he was one of the first people I talked with. He impressed upon me more than just a sale! He at the time was working at "The Aquaium" and gave me some really great advice! So thank you John, I would love to see your tank on "TOM" "tank of the month" perfect person to start with!!!! for us beginners.
Anyway although we are fairly new to the hobby I would like to have our tank previewed. As an example of a beginners tank. My husband works very dilengintly and I just mostly enjoy his hard work, but we still have lots of fun and questions. So if you ever want a beginners tank call.
Although I do not have the capability to take "digital pictures" I would like to help any way I can. Let me know.

John Fletcher,
How much of the success of your reef do you attribute to your low fish load? Was/Is it intentional?
How come no pictures of the little blenny? He's the coolest fish in the tank!

The low bioload from fish is intentional in part because I've been told, lower amounts of fish equals less work. I don't know if this is a true statement, because next months Tank of the Month (June), Danny Lueck's tank is absolutely beautiful and he has a large fish load. So to sum it up, I like the look of more fish, but don't want to add to many fish to this tank, because it has been this way for so long.
To answer the question on the Barnacle Bleeny. Danny tried several time to get a good picture of this small fish in it's hole, but everytime the flash went off the bugger would go way back into it's hole.

Is there someone in particular that you are thinking about? I've been picked for July (Thanks, Danny! You rock!!). Marcus- I see your point. In the beginning when John Fletcher first started this thread. Jake made it known that He and Adam are very busy. I don't think anyone doubts that one bit. My hat's off to these guys. How they do it I'll never know.
My suggestion of having the current TOM person randomly pick the next one was only, to not put it all on one person to have to find a TOM each month. It wasn't my intention for it to be a matter of just picking friends. Simply, a "tag your it" because your a club member that has a nice aquarium.
At the time we were just getting this thing started and needed some type of format. Now things are in full swing and other details have been taken care of, such as who takes the pictures and gets the info to Jake.
If there are enough members who think there is a better way to select the TOM, mabey we should change the method. In any case let's not stop the flow. Let's keep the TOM thing rolling.
