So we bought a tank. Which supposedly was 280 gallons. it is actually more like 200 gallons. apparently the guy measured wrong. It is 4 ft by 3ft by 25 inches tall.

So first off we moved my 72 bowfront from my linoleum floor into the living room where my 45 tall used to be. The 45 was torn down and the bowfront was reset up. We are waiting until it goes through it's mini cycle to put the fish and corals back in

Next we had to set up the stand in the old 72 spot. Keys to a good stand.

*must hold tank
*must hold two dogs and sump

I will definetly keep everyone updated. we are planning to go get salt tomorrow to make up the initial water (we are looking at about two buckets just to get it running) We also have to go and get a 2" bulkhead from somewhere b/c the guy had to cut it off when he took it apart. he couldnt get it undone. So hopefully by tomorrow afternoon we will have it running with water.

we were originally planning on putting my 40 breeder in there as a refugium, but since the tank was only 3" deep instead of 4" we now don't have enough room for it. anyone have any ideas? i was thinking of just doing a rubbermaid container. they are easy to drill and i don't really need to see in it. even if i did i could go the clear route.

hopefully the weather is good we are in the middle of a snow storm! we have like 4 inches of snow right now on the ground.
this is a good bad weather project though!

there wont be any!!! not in the display at least. this if my first bare bottom Embarrassed tank, and hopefully it works out. I've seen many very successful tanks with no sand at all. this is also my first acrylic tank (which im NOT fond of other than the weight of it!) and i though by not having any sand in the display it would help me to not scratch the sides as much.

we'll see how it works out. in the refugium we have about 4 inches of sand. I'll get a pic up of that as soon as we get it going

i'm actually pretty interested myself. I really like sand. the look of it the filtration. etc etc etc. i'm not going completely sandless since the refugium will have some, but after doing a lot of research on reefcentral of large reeftanks it seems they arent really a problem. there are quite a few sps reefs that have no sand at all. the main reason we put it in the refugium was for a buffer for the water. As of today we had ammonia of .25 and nitrates at 10. seems to be doing a cycle which was expected with so much new rock.

for the lighting we have decided on lumenbright reflectors. we are going to have two 400w on the system. I want to do a canopy and kyle does not. I'm thinking open top and open back, but sides that open outward on all sides for access to the tank. we'll see how possible this is as i wont be able to remove the canopy if need be as it will be too high and too heavy. we'll see. kyle's thinking more towards hanging the lighting from the ceiling. which i don't want to do b/c we rent. its bad enough we have two fish tanks of almost 500 gallons two ferrets and two dogs :) i'm going to start charging admission to the zoo!

well here is the update. we are finishing up staining the canopy. it is pretty much going to touch the ceiling. two lumenbrights should be in my this weekend which will house 2x400w radium 20k's. we should also have the mesh this weekend. 1/4 inch so no wrasses can escape! currently in the tank are 3 chromis', a pair of pink skunks, a cleaner wrasse, and about 500 heads of frogspawn (no joke) i'll get a picture up soon

ya know i've heard that they will sting ppl. I had it touching my skin for a good 4 minutes or so when i was trying to situate it in the rock. about 5 minutes later i had an intense burning/itching and had to go wash my arm off. it was covered in torch slime, and really freaked me out!

yes he moved himself to the bottom in the back.  looks a lot happier there! I cant wait either. I'm dying for a fish to be swimming around in there. the clowns and chromis' kind of just stay in a hole together hiding. apparently its too much like the ocean!

Crystal, something that may help the electric bill....

I had a 90 gallon once upon a time. It had over 1000 watts of lighting. I only would turn the 400 watt light on for a few hours a day. The rest of the day i used a DE 250watt bulb. The corals seemed to do well and i saved a ton of money. My current setup has a 400 watt MH but it's only on about 2 hours a day. The rest of the day its lit with two 27watt PCs.

I don't know if you've ever seen how they light reef tanks in Japan, but it's something to consider. Basically have lots of bulbs in the canopy, but they come on at different times, or all at once. Looks pretty cool. You can set up the timers to save lots of cash and pay off the extra lighting. Something to consider at least

Tank looks Awesome BTW :)

Well here is the latest update. Everything is going well. we had only had an ammonia spike for the first three days of setting up the tank with the liverock and live sand etc. We decied to add three chromis' a week later. it has been i believe three - four weeks now and it is housing the three chomis' two pink skunks (were added a week later) and I today added my anthias, and my two wrasses. I had been feeding the tank heavier than needed before adding these fish to build up bacteria, and everything has been doing great. no nitrate spikes or anything.

the newest addition to the tank is my little wrasse jump guard. I got the mesh in the mail today 1/4 inch, and put it in the frame. Kyle measured the frame to cover the hole on the tank. he however did not take into account the canopy sitting on top. SOOOO i'm going to have to trim it up an inch or so for it to fit.

all corals are also doing great in the tank. lots of LPS, some huge mushrooms, a couple small mushrooms and a bubble tip

I think it would be cool to put a Iwasaki over the SPS. If you haven't seen one before, I think you would be surprised how much brighter they are. You would get better SPS growth as well. That is, if you can handle natural-looking light. Your lighting is awesome, as is, though. Easily my favorite i've seen in the club.

So.......Jeremy (Jhamb} was still willing to take your pics even though you forgot his float valve? ....... Let him know that I will be holding it for him.....or the next person going to Cedar.......

Anyway, the tank looks great, love the SPS arch......It is crazy how fast you can fill a bigger tank......I sold quite a few corals, but now it looks like we are both in the same waiting game.......when you get upset working on the tank, just think of what it will look like after all those frags grow into colonies......again, love the pics.....

I understand that the natural light you get better growth out of it, but I'm too into the really blue light to do it. I seem to be getting some pretty good growth out of everything i've had for a month or so. Right now there is no actinic supplement and I think i'd hate how it would look w/ the natural light.
