It is just a clip on fan, upside down(mounted to the ceiling), with the fan and shroud removed. I then hung the fan directly over the center of the tank and drilled a hole through the brace(just over 3/4" for an easy, but not too roomy space that the 1/2" pvc cane rotate through w/o any drag). Then I attached a length of 1/2 pvc from the fan to the stream(in the tank at the desired depth... remember: too close to the surface if the water WILL result in sucking air), cut it in half and added a quick connect coupling(you may have to cut some length off of the 1/2 pvc due to the added length). I then attached both ends of the pvc to the bottom of the fan and the stream (trying to make it as strait and least off-centered as possible). Finally, I put all of these pieces together and place as desired in the tank, but you're not done... with everything in place and the PVC through the brace to the stream, mark the pvc that is through the brace 1/8" above the brace on the pvc( this is where I added a 1/2" pvc pipe coupling to sit directly at that line and above(will act as a stop and will not allow any more than a 1/8" drop if the overall length into the tank). Finally, with a small length of unpainted wire hanger, wrap a piece around the pvc between the the brace and the "stop" to act as a bushing and help to eliminate or decrease drag as well as to help the rotation to continue smoothly. Hopefully I've explained this well as this is pretty much what I've done and it seems to work really well... If you want to see this in person to get your own ideas, you're welcome to come on up. That makes since. I just don't think my apartment complex would like me attaching stuff to the celing  . I've been trying to think of a way to do this that would be compact, but I haven't figured that out yet. You could consider a "brace" across the span of the tank to mount to and design similarly by just mounting to the brace... could be an eyesore though.

I got mine from Walmart... of course. However, I would suggest you pay the $$$ for a better built fan that can handle a little more drag on the gearing and possibly the ability to ocsillate at a slower pace. I tried to put an plug in light dimmer on the fan, but to no effect...

I've actually been trying to figure out how to do this for awhile. This is definetly the future of phs. It is only a matter of time before a company comes out with a decent ph that oscillates. I've tried designing an electric motor to oscillate back and forth, but to get it to do that is very difficult at least in a compact area. I need to take apart one of the cheap fans to see how they did it, because I know its not as simple as it seems. ------------- 90 gallon mixed reef My fish swim naked. |

I saw a post somewhere using a motor/gearing from a yard or holiday decoration that was animated to twist a bit from side to side, but my idea came a while ago and just didn't have the urge to take the plung until I set up a bigger tank that could take that kind of flow.

What about the small motor in a sea swirl? I am sure you can buy just the motor from them...but I am not sure? Just throwin an idea out there!

Shane H tried to do it... relatively cheap, too... you just have to have a need for bulk and be a business. The problem isn't the motor... I expect that there are several motors or drives that would work. However, the gearing and oscillating mechanism for the overall operations would be the key to making the machine work as intended. ------------- www.captivereefing.com |

That's exactly what that is... the prop in the housing will come on moving either way(clock wise or counter-clock wise about 50% of the time). With the nozzle cut off, that leaves the water exiting the maxi-jet the ability to exit either at a left or right direction from the maxi-jet.
