I would like to install a rack to hold my MH's in my canopy that can be
pushed back to get my arm in the tank without getting burnt. The
only thing I can think of that can span the nearly 5 feet without
sagging would be 3/4" or 1" aluminum. It would likely be just a
really wide H with the top and bottom closed into a rectange nearly 5'
wide, by about a foot front to back. Let me know if any of you can help me weld some aluminum. I would bring the pieces all cut, just need to lay it out and weld it up. I am afraid that rivets wouldn't hold up to the torsional
stresses. I would also have to stack the square tubing which
could be difficult, and consume more space.

welding aluminum is fairly specialized compared to "normal" welding. it requires different welding tips and preferably a different gas mixture. unless we have someone who is a professional welder on the board (maybe?) most home welders don't have the set up to do aluminum. unfortunately a lot of professional welding shops don't have the equipment to weld aluminum either

Good luck. Personally, I would try to triangulate it as much as possible and use rivets in lieu of welding. David is right- it takes skill to weld it right. |
