I added a couple of brittle stars to my tank.....

Do they put out slicks of black crud on the sand?

Do i need to be concerned with the crud? Should I try to get it out?

Not that I am aware of, and am unsure of what the "crud" could be other than detritus or a cyanobacteria species.

Yup, black, it also comes in green, red, and purple. There are a great many species of this bacteria.

Cyano is the only black stuff I know that would appear overnight. It is not as palatible to snails and hermits, so stopping the feeding for 5 days is the best way to stop it.

I threw in a gold headed sleeper goby who does nothing but sift sand.  No more crud!
