So what's my favorite corals??? Suncorals!! Heart them!!!  There's a good bud on the forum who gave me a colony because they need the extra T.L.C - so I thought I would post pics of their progress. . .

10/29/06 - pretty sad huh? Cry

12/3/06 - Ah. . .looking a bit better!  I think at this point they were trained.  I will have to say training them was the hardest part, but once you got them there - it's all down hill ya know!

1/1/07 - Wha? Do I see babies??

Today:

Up-close of the offspring:

Sorry for the crappy pics. . . but you kind of get the idea.  Wink  I think I've doubled the heads on this colony.  I'm super impressed and patted myself on the back Embarrassed

Well I have a 27gal nano and I think these corals are perfect nano tank corals.

But when I got them. . I had to turn off all my water movement devices and lay the mysis on them.  making sure all the heads got food.  If the heads are connected by tissue then you just have to worry about feeding the main head.  (are you confused?)  But I did this for bout a month, every night around the same time.  The corals got to the point where they just opened up every night once the pcs turned off.

Once they got to that stage, I left the pumps on and I could shoot the mysis/brine mixture to the heads and they got caught the food.  But I think what really started them to grow more is krill.  Yup they eat krill!  When I had my fungia I would feed them krill so why not the sun corals. . . I think when I feed them the krill I could go longer between feedings.

The suncorals are at a point where they know when food gets shot in the tank and they begin opening up.  But my black sun corals in the process of training. . . . just begin opening at night. . . . hopefully in a month or two I can post progress shots of them. Wink

Okay boring rant over. . .

So just curious. Do you feed at the EXACT same time each day? Or does it need to be within a window -- namely -- feed within an hour or two of a certain time?

I have always wanted a sun coral but have feared that I wouldn't be disiplined enough for them. I have no problem spot feeding them, my problem is spot feeding them at an exact time each day. When I feed it is somewhere between 6:00 pm and 10:00 pm and I don't know if that is as exact as they would need.

I feed mine at random times, and they open up very quickly when they "smell" food.

Suzy hit it on the mark. . . I just feed them any time after my lights went off.  And she's right, once they get the smell of food they open up.

Sometimes I add just a little bit of food around the colony and they open, though I feed them cyclop-eze and they just seem to gorge themselves.  After three rounds of feeding I stop for fear they will explode!

I have noticed something with my sun corals and wanted others' opinion.  The day after I put them into my tank they extended their polyps to feed for a night or two.  Then they kept them retracted and wouldn't extend even with a quick blast of cyclop-eze.  The end of last week they extended fully a coule of nights in a row just as the mh's turned off.  Now they are back to not opening.  This morning I hit them with a quick blast of cyclop-eze and a couple opened.

Any input?

John

I just got a colony of suncorals today. Clap They are all closed up right now.  Does anyone have suggestions on when I should feed them the first time and any special needs they have.  I put it  in my 29 gal tank with pc lighting.  Thanks in advance for any advice.

So are "sun polyps" and "sun coral" the same thing?

My wife picked up some "sun polyps" from Aquatica Saturday because she really likes the color (in spite of the feeding issues, etc.)...

They opened up last night (I saw them with the 'moonlights' on) but I figured I'd give them at least another day or 2 (night or 2?) until I try to feed them.

Just want to make sure all the tips posted here for sun "coral" also apply to sun "polyps" Wink

Thanks!

Sun polys were only 27 bucks... so you can guess which way we went LOL

Amy, Soon you'll want some of these.  Quite a bit larger than the sun polyps, and they stay open most of the day.
