Every now and then, I have a bubble in my tank that looks like a spider web. I would only see it in the morning, so one night I snuck in to take a peak at who was making this bubble web. It was the six line wrasse. Does anyone have any insight why the wrasse would do this. It uses the bubble for sleeping in. The pictures are not very good, but it is at the bottom of the rock touching the sand. Usually the wrasse will find a hole in the rocks to sleep in, but sometimes it spins the web.  ------------- James Mellor Eagle Mountain 210 gallon reef |

Yep, they are actually called mucous cocoons. It serves as a sleeping bag for them at night. Very common in the Labridae family.

I learned something interesting. Last weekend, I went to the Shark Reef in Las Vegas. There is an eel tank there. I learned that certain types of fish spin mucous cocoons to hide their smell from eels. Since Eels can not see very well, they rely mostly on smell to find their food. Because I had a snowflake eel in the tank, my wrasse would sleep in the cocoon. Since I have moved the wrasse to my tank without the eel, it has not spun its cocoon. ------------- James Mellor Eagle Mountain 210 gallon reef |

I wish I had known this when I bought my six-line. I think I killed the poor dude. First night in my tank he spun his web and I thought he was freaking out... I thought (and it seemed extremely obvious at the time) that he couldn't breathe that kind of water. So I burst his bubble twice that night (literally) and he ended up kicking the bucket. I felt bad and have since learned what this post has said, yes, it's for protective purposes. Too bad I rubbed him off. ------------- Ils sont fous, ces Romains! |
