i am the proud papa of a couple of baby bangaii cardinals they are currently in my 'fuge and doing well as of last nights birth ( it seems like it would be pretty traumatic to be spat out! ) <grin> ... and i have a couple of questions. thanks |

there are a couple of 'hints' ... i'll dig up the links and post them when i get home tonight. if i remember correctly the male has a bit more of a square jaw and there is a difference in the height of the main fin on their back. |

You need to contact Brad Adams ( Brad A. ) on this board. He has raised hundreds of cardinals. Also, I think Jeff Hite was breeding some. I know that Zoecon is highly recommended and has been shown to greatly increase growth rate. I would go with mysis shrimp, or live brine for this, if you can. Congrats Coryk. The refugium is a great place for them to grow because much of their food occurs naturally there. A friend of mine did nothing extra and the babies grew naturally. Smashed frozen brine shrimp is small enough for them to eat. But they won't eat it if they are getting enough in the refugium. They are naturally nocturnal feeders BTW.
Brad's article about his Breeding Bangaii is right here on the website in the Sea Star Online, Feb. 2002 issue. There is no sure way to distinguish sexes in these fish, until the male has a mouthful of eggs. Mine were almost the opposite of everything everyone said to use as distinguishing characteristics! fantastic.. thanks everyone. i wish i had been more prepared for them... i know that i have three of them in the refugium, there might be a couple more... hopefully i can get a couple pics sometime this weekend! they sure a re cupte little things.. |

keodog: thanks! i also read about cyclop-eeze on RC and stopped to get some on friday. I'll post back about how they do with it. everything in my tank seems to go nuts for it. so, hopefully the baby cardinals will also. i was only able to keep 3 - 4 of the babies... next time i'll be a little better prepared. i picked-up some acrylic to make a small tank to raise them in. I think my refugium has to much flow and a couple of them got washed away. |

kingsspot1: thanks very much for the offer! i think i got it worked out - i put a acrylic "wall" in the refugium and they are doing great now! thanks again! it never ceases to amaze me, how much people in the club are happy to help you out! |

wanted to give a little update... i only had 2 of the little guys make it ... next time i'll be a little better prepared! here is a pic of the two that DID make it though. thanks for the help!

pretty darn cute, eh? i think i must have taken 40 shots to get that one! lucky for me they were both very curious about what i was looking at! oh ya... and they seem to be resopnding very well to cyclop-eeze and frozen baby brine. |
