This is the most clever modification I've seen for external pump noise.

I took the fan off my Iwaki 70 (which is loud) and it cut the noise by 80% or more. After I get a quiet computer fan mounted, I'll see how it cools the pump. The screw/bolt holding the fan onto the drive shaft is reverse-threaded on my Iwaki. Lefty tighty, Righty loosey.

Is your pump still running? This mod looks great. Im definatly going to do it to shut up my larger pump.  Now I just need to find a good p4 heatsink, shouldn't be a problem in my basement. ;)

Reef central is not always the brightest place to be. If my understanding of heat transfer is of any value, that pictured heatsink is a useless piece. The fan pulls hot air away from the motor. It does no good to pull the hot air past a piece of metal. Just having the metal in the line of air movement does nothing to increase cooling, in fact, IMO it probably reduces the effeciency of the fans ability to pull hot air away from around the motor.
A heat sink must be solidly attached with a lot of contact to a heated device. It then conducts heat away from the area of greatest heat and heats the surrounding air which can be moved away for better cooling effect.

You're both right and wrong Mark  . You do understand heat transfer, but I don't think you read much of the rc thread. I thought the exact same thing as you, until I read into the thread a little. He's pushing/holding the heat sink tight up against the back side of the motor (probably using a little heat transfer paste too) to draw the heat out into the fins. Works the same way the heat sink on your computer CPU works. No, I ran it for about 6 months like that, but then switched to an Iwaki 40 and left the motor fan in place. But while I had it, it ran just fine. Yeah a computers heatsink takes massive amounts of heat away. Just a fan alone would take a much smaller amount away. If the proper heatsink can be found with some good surface area the idea would pull plenty of heat away; Way more than any fan alone. A heatsink spreads the heat so it can be blown away by the fan it is very efficient (it better be or the computer you are typing on would have stoped working long ago, even with a huge fan on.)
