Might be worth trying, seeing as how I have a 55 gallon though, maybe I'd go smaller.

Page 8 has some good pics of the finished product.

This is pretty sweet too.  If I can figure these out for my application, I can save myself some serious money.

Those skimmers bring a whole new meaning to 'ghetto'! I'll stop teasing repto about his projects now.

Is it "ghetto" cause someone wants to save money?  Or is it "ghetto" cause someone else is doing it, not you?  If it works, why not?

It is ghetto because it looks like crap. If it works well. . . well, it's still ghetto. Like a crappy homeade screen-door can keep flys out eh.

I think what shane means (I am no cross-internet mind reader and I am
pretty sure he isnt my twin that we can sense each other's mental state )
by ghetto is that it looks like something that will be appreciated for its
function by everyone but some will snicker abut its looks, it does not
necessarily have a negative connotation. If it works great I would build it, if
someone jokes about its look I'll mix the skimmate in their beer.

Good point.  I made my skimmer, but it works great and only cost me about $50 instead of hundreds, so I don't care if it is ghetto or not.  My wallet is not as skinny because my skimmer is more ghetto

DIY skimmer and Phospban reactors? Maybe soneone should invent a DIY
carbon reactor!

I have found that most everything that people find on RC has already been done by people in this group. Plus, this group is more personal. We can actually talk about things in person and visit each other to see what we've made and how it's working.

But the stuff JFinch makes may be ghetto, but it doesn't look ghetto.

Just had a Mini-Reef Tour with folks in Tooele last Saturday. Thanks to GahlenF, Bob Kripfgans and Firefish for letting Amie, Angel and myself see their setups and visit with them.

Bob, how's that ghetto Weir overflow doing?

Hey Mark...the Ghetto weir is kicking again. I found a small leak sealed it the next morning and presto....the ghetto weir is up and running. While I had my tank apart to repair the weir I changed all my plumbing. I removed my top mounted closed loop and added side pvc tubes with a couple of T's and 2 90 degree elbows at each T. I added end caps to the elbows which I slotted at the end. I can redirect the flow by turning the 90 degree elbows at many angles. The supreme ghetto solution. BTW I didnt realize all the light cut off by the top mounted pvc closed loop. I was like night and day.  Thanks for stopping by I had a great time with everyone and learned a few things along the way. I also was really impressed with the T-5 lighting on Gahlen's tank it was kick ass.

Geez! A mini reef tour in Tooele and nobody called me? That's too bad, I've always wondered what people would say about my tank in person!

And on the topic I don't think I'd have a problem with a "ghetto skimmer."  Most the times a skimmer isn't something that people would set next to their display tank so why does it have to look flawless?  If you have the talent and time to DIY on anything in this hobby, go for it!

Sorry, We only had time for three stops on the tour that evening.

Make yourself known to your WMAS neighbors by first calling to go see their tanks. That's what I do.

You don't know me very well yet do you?

By ghetto I meant it looks like crap. Regardless of who built it or how much money it costs.

No disrespect for the idea or the gumption to do it. That is the true spirit of DIY; try it, refine it, share it.

I think the culligan skimmer is still in the try it stage. I'd be interested to see if it works. Someone keep tabs on the thread and let us know.

BTW, repto has one of the best looking tanks in the club and even he will tell you some of his projects are ghetto.

Ah I see, so ghetto is more for the look?  So deedo does have a point.  If it works well it's still ghetto.  Shibaji, I would probably mix skimmate with their beer as well.  No offense everybody, just wondering what made something "ghetto".
