Ok, WMAS people! I need help building a new overflow box. I never had one before ! Just plain old stinking tubing set at the height of the water level. Worked great until I got a super fansy-pansy pump for our sump!   So the overflow I got can't keep up with the pump. I need more lift tubes. I think I got the design I want in my head (scary, huh?). But how do you big pump people deal with the noise? Is there way to tone it down? I don't mind the sound of a trickling brook, but we got a raging river! Thanks !

Check out this site, it talks about building a Durso overflow...Alot of people on reefcentral use this type of standpipe: http://www.rl180reef.com/pages/standpipe/standpipe_frame.htm

Another type people use is the stockman overflow here: http://www.livinglava.com/diy_stockman_mod.htm

Hope that helps,

Troy

What size is your drain pipe going to your sump?  I am using 2 1.5" pipes for my drain for the mag 36 pump. I have tried plugging one to see if it would handle the flow and it won't.

If it were me I'd put the old return pump back in the sump and hook the new pump in a closed loop.  You're not going to hear anything (waterwise) in the closed loop and you don't have to worry about a new overflow.  If the pump itself is noisey, sell it and get an Iwaki.

Danny - how noisey is your closed loop circulation?

Hi,

Jon- "If it were me I'd put the old return pump back in the sump and hook the new pump in a closed loop.  You're not going to hear anything (waterwise) in the closed loop and you don't have to worry about a new overflow."

I agree 100%.

"If the pump itself is noisey, sell it and get an Iwaki."

I'm not sure how the noise of Mag36 would compare to its Iwaki counterpart. (It would take a Iwaki 100($353) AND a Iwaki 70($287) to do 3600gph).  But generally speaking, Iwakis are good pumps.

If you're looking for high flow and want it quiet,. You might consider the Dolphin Ampmaster 3000($287). I know they had some problem with the seals awhile back, but this may have been fixed.

:D
