Topic: ORA Mandarin @ LR&R Posted: December 14 2011 at 9:33am |
Has anyone purchased an ORA Blue or Red Mandarin from Live Rock and Reef. ORA claims that these fish will consume commercially prepared foods and are not dependant on pods to survive. I am just curious if anyone has actually purchased one of these fish and what their experience has been with them.
Thanks!

I havent personally, I have seen them and have witnessed them eat( not at LRR)
I would say tell them to feed it, if it doesnt eat dont buy it, even if they say it ate earlier that day. Go back another day.

Agreed, if I were going to buy a mandarin it would have to be captive raised. I'd watch it eat a couple times before I'd buy it.

Agreed, but red mandarins are an extremely beautiful fish, I have been wanting one for a long time now. Anyone think i would have issues w/ a melanurus wrasse, bue hippo tang, yellow tang, niger trigger, yellow tail damsel, and a clownfish.

Noone actually has bought one of these that cares to chime in....?
They seem to fly out of their tanks over there.
I always make a store feed a fish before I purchase it so I can observe that it is actually eating!

Great. No acclimation box? or would an acclimation box be the right thing to do for a fish who floats around rocks?

No information first hand, but I read about this and posts to other sites seem to be hit or miss... some long drawn out sagas of these fish not eating and dying while eventually some seem to be ok... I decided it was too much money to gamble... REALLY curious how it goes! Keep us updated.
Super cool fish... strange thing is my wife thinks they are ugly!!

Keep in mind even when eating frozen, these guys need to eat 2-3 times a day, everyday... to maintain weight...
