I just put a Naso Tang into my aquarium and my yellow tang
(approximately the same size) is not happy about it. It's the first time I've
seen him use the little spiky thing on his tail. My clown fish did this when
I added a new one for a few days and then the violence died down.
SHould I expect the same with these two. Is there anything I can do to
establish peace sooner or ease the tension?

Furthermore, the yellow tang has never been agressive to any other fish.
It seems like the naso tang is sufficiently different looking that the yellow
wouldn't feel threatened by his presence. How does a yellow tang see a
naso tang and say to himself- "uh oh, there's another surgeonfish".
These probably aren't the most exciting issues for all you old pros but it's
the latest in my watery world.

You can turn the lights off for awhile, untill tomorrow, but they will probably be that way for a few days. Yellows and purples are very authoritarian.

I had this problem with my tangs also. Try to make sure they are both
well fed (maybe add something to graze on like greenleaf, at different
parts of the tank). It will stop in a few days. Also if you are ever
thinking about another tang it is my opinion to add it now. That way
not just one tang feels the aggression of the original.

I used a stick (I've done this before) to let a Yellow Tang know that a new Purple Tang was not to be bullied. After 7 days the YT allowed the PT to come out of the corner for more than just a brief foray. Now a month later, they get along, ...most of the time. At least the damage they did to each other, frayed fins and scraped bodies, has healed. Those peduncle scalpels are amazing weapons.
In your tank, the YT sees the Naso as a threat to it's food supply. Extra large feedings will help the Naso to keep it's strength during this time and the YT may come to learn that there is enough food for the two of them. It's also helpful if you offer a variety of foods: lots of live algae, meaty foods, algae based flake foods and Nori.

Thanks. It's always a tense time for me when I first put new fish in. Funny
how much I worry about it really.
Another thing I did was rearrange the rocks. I had heard that that
decreases the feeling of ownership for the fish that was already in there
becuase things are new for him too. Is this a myth?
I had wanted to rearrange a bit anyway and add some LBTR that I
collected. Once again thanks to the WMAS message board for good
directions on where to get it.
I'll feed them a bit more than normal for a while. My Yellow Tang never
took to eating Nori or Romaine, but readily eats flakes out of my hand.
Can you train them to eat that stuff somehow?

I've always been told that a yellow tang is the last fish to add because they are very terratorial about newcomers, esepcially fish of a similar size. Be careful there is not a lot of new stress introduced because it can cause other problems!
I've found that rearraging the rocks helps, create a spec for each...and watch carefully for any signs of real stress that could precipitate a real problem.

I used the stick idea with my yellow tang. When I added the first fish with my yellow tang it took a few days of me chasing the yellow away with the stick. Then I added a powder blue and a regal tang and it only took a few minutes with the stick and the yellow left them alone.

What do you mean create a spec? It seems like things have mellowed out a bit. The yellow is still definitely watching him and kind of following him around, but not trying to stab him anymore. The Naso doesn't seem to be eating other than grazing on the rocks. Food floats right past him and he sort of moves toward it but then never gets it. Either he has poor depth perception or he's just disinterested

I had a great Naso tang I bought a few months back. He was a little skinny at first but he soon fattened up and ate a ton. Then my father inlaw decided to feed him pond fish food. My naso bloated and died that night. Sad sad day.

That Naso hasn't been eating. He was grazing on the rocks, but never the
food I put in. Last 2 days he's been hiding in a cave most all day. I tried
Formula 1 flakes (which is the preferred food of my other Tang) and Nori.
I'm just worried that he'll waste away. Should I try anything else- other
foods or feeding methods? Any ideas would be appreciated.

My tangs love to graze on romaine. It is
easy to rubberband a leaf to a small rock and let the tangs graze for a
few days. It isn't the healthiest but it is better then starving. When
things settle down you can feed as normal.

I just caught my yellow tang and threw it in my sump for awhile because it was picking on my new powder blue tang. can't have a $20 fish picking on a $70 fish.
I have a blonde naso that Ive had for almost two years "awesome fish" all my fish love brine shrimp soaked in garlic

Stephan,
You need to entice the naso to eat soon. You may try using a clip to hang some romaine or better yet, some nori in the tank. This gives the naso the opportunity to get at the food even if the other fish are competing.
I have lost several naso tangs and the behavoir you're describing is identifal to those that have not made it.

The brine shrimp coaxed him out for a bit and he ate. Hopefully things

Is he grazing yet? I would still hang some nori in the tank so that he can eat regularly.
