Topic: Life Without This Club Posted: January 31 2005 at 12:37am |
I'd like to start another topic here to bring forth some concerns. Unusual (at least ironic) timing here. As we approach our upcoming elections I'd like to re-emphasize something. This club really needs members, a presidency, and volunteers willing to make it work. We certainly do have one of the most active and largest clubs in the nation, and for that I've been very thankful.
Please read the announcement I'll post below that was sent to many people (including most club presidents around the nation). The content of this will occupy a large portion of my next few days, as a sister club in Las Vegas is shutting down.

RIP: LVMAS 1997-2005
Welcome to the last LVMAS Newsletter due to the minimal input from LVMAS members, splinter clubs here in Las Vegas that cant unite and minimal standards, ethics and quality from the LFS. The LVMAS domain and hosting was paid for for 10 years. I made a few modifications to the LVMAS.ORG web site and will leave the site up since it gets a lot of use and it took me years developing the Q&A database. However, I have decided to the LVMAS to rest (like 3 previous clubs) and discontinue all future meetings. I will now put my own reef, and energies toward other things. I was approached by a California Club who wants to bid a MACNA to be held here in Las Vegas. I wish them and any other club(s) the very best of luck.
I briefly want to thank Jack and the Mandalay Bay's Shark Reef and its employees for their support and it members of the last 7 years who have participated.
LVMAS.ORG - WHAT IS
This is the final attempt to convince the Aquarium Industry and educate the hobbyist and for everyone to clean up their act, by saving their pennies and do things right the first time rather than jumping in, finding a web site telling you haw to maintain a reef on your allocated "cheap" budget and buying cheap parts seen and read on the Internet and or by their local aquarium stores referred to as "LFS". Here in Las Vegas, they are substandard and as a tourist, not worth your time or your visit. This web site is /will NOT for the hobbyist with the "Budget Reefer" mentality.
LVMAS.ORG - WHAT WAS
Welcome to what used to be the LVMAS.ORG web site for what was The Las Vegas Marine & Reef Aquarium Society. It was started in late 1997 by Howard Hoag (a hobbyist since 1991) when the Las Vegas Marine Society when under The communication that was handed down from previous clubs was that "Good Luck!" The consensus given was that the Las Vegas Hobbyist was not quite the same as in other areas of the US. After a membership in the LA area, Howard thought he would give it a shot anyway.
The Newsletter started in 1998, Papers filed in 2001 and the purchase of the LVMAS domain, and at the request of the members of his newsletter, started to hold reef club meetings, in the beginning, 30-60 people would attend, Many LFS sponsors jumped on board. LVMAS was completely autonomous as a club should be. It didn't take long to realize everyone wanted free "stuff" from the club, form the LFS meetings and everyone wanted the LVMAS to have a "Discount Card". The point completely missed by attendees. The club isn't about getting free stuff from the club or the LFS's but education and the ability to do the reef hobby RIGHT. The Frag trades were to increase the diversity in ones aquarium and understand clearly how to take care of your new "pet". Since the dues have never covered the cost of the website, many of the pages may come down. in following days, weeks.
Howard has decided to retire this club due to lack of participation and time and the development of 3 other reef clubs within the area, "...good luck". Instead will concentrate on improving the quality of the local aquarium trade and the education for the hobbyist, to discourage the common practice of the "Budget Reefer" and encourage the "Do it right the first time Reefer".
Warm Farewell. Howard Hoag

Too bad for them, but it sounds like this guy has a bit of a chip on his shoulder against the "Budget Reefer".
I think the fact that this club let's us learn how others have succeeded through inovative and often inexpensive means is one of the best things about it. Sure it'd be great if we could all buy the top of the line product right of the bat, but that's not the real world, and it doesn't sound like this guy has touch with it. (maybe it's true that LV hobbyists are different, *cough*Elitist*cough**huhmph*)
True also that frag trades are a great way to increase diversity, but the fact that I get to do it at $5-10 a pop is great. If I only added new corals when I could buy a $60+ specimen I'd be up to about 7-8 corals by now instead of about 40 differnet great corals.
and as far as "do it right the first time" Has anyone here done that yet? anyone? where's the fun in that?

I've been a tad bummed lately, too. Maybe I romantized a little
about what our club is (or was) and kinda felt maybe I had it
wrong all along...
Maybe that's kinda how Howard is feeling... I wonder if Howard
is kinda feeling like LVMAS is just a place for some people to
make moola, others to get cheap frags....
I know there is a core group of people in our clubwho are very
dedicated to promoting captive reefs, protecting aquatic
lifeforms, and saving something larger than ourselves.
But, I wonder if we could do more to promote that side of what
the club is.....(Or am I imagining we are more than we actually
are?)
Adam, are you saying that we do not have enough volunteers,
presidency and members that are willing to make it work? Are
you meaning people to make the cheap frag thing work? Or
something else?

Well my stance is this. Regardless of what our club was meant to do, is doing, or will do in the future, we do have a great group of people who work to make it happen. I'm not sure I want to get into what I think this club is about, I'll leave that for the next president coming in and the new presidency. But in Vegas there are 4 (now 3) marine aquarium clubs. Why? It doesn't make any sense. It is frustrating to see personalities cause such problems. They have enough people, enough energy, but are divided into several clubs and can't just unite. It would be like if we did have a Cache Valley Club, Salt Lake Club, Utah County Club.
Keep in mind this Vegas club had been around about 8 years..... almost as old as our club.

Comment from a guest
I've been very pleased by the amount of information this club has provided me in my short history as a salt water hobbyist.
I've hesitated joining the actual club because I can never make it to the meetings, and thus far my budget has gone into the basic necessities of my aquarium (food, upkeep, basic supplies). I check this board nearly every day with a few exceptions and in general am able to find quite a lot of valuable information. I am glad to know that there are so many people nearby who love this hobby more than I do!
It is my hope to become more involved in the coming months and eventually give you my money to pay for my membership.
As a guest of the club I appreciate the service and help which this board has provided!
Thanks

I am not too surprised. Personality is what drives every organization. That's why the WMAS is doing so well. It has a very fine leader at the helm.
As a WMAS founder and past president, I had trouble letting go and it has sometimes been hard to see things being done differently than how I had envisioned. It sounds like Howard couldn't let go and allow the club to evolve according to the wishes of it's most active members.
I want to add, even though the WMAS is a little different than how I may have imagined, it is a pleasure to be part of this amazing and fun group. Why just yesterday, I was able to take a mini reef tour with some of my WMAS friends; Smatney, her husband Fred and Ross Bagshaw (Carolyn is out of town, but don't worry, she already made the treats for Thursday's meeting. Ross just needs to take them out of the freezer.)
We visited four hobbyists in Herriman; SJLopez, Riley, TonyG and Micah M.(can't remember his forum name )
We had a great time. This club and forum has a great group of people.

My reply came out so wrong! I was trying to read between the
lines of Howards message!
I think the situation in Vegas would be more like if the WMAS
broke up into seperate clubs in the same location! Like, Murray
and Sandy and West Jordan! I think I met one of the
personalties on RC, someone who was starting a club in
Vegas.......
It is too bad....It would have been cool to go to Macna!
I must say I owe a lot to WMAS! My sink, installed by Chris is
the coolest thing! All the Utah rock and advice provided by
Mark, my soon to be bought and installed by Bruce ( I hope the
offer is still available?) RO system. All the smart information by
this board, and the incredible diplomatic advice from PMs (Jake
needs to get into politics!)
And, all my reef is CB, provided by trades with some of the
nicest people on this planet!
I've met the most incredibly wonderful people through this club!
How many times I've needed rots or green, or a tank sitter or
somebody to scrape a dried up ol' snake off my cement floor!
Somebody came through.
And, last but not least, my fish hero will always be you, Adam!
I keep trying to read between the lines of what you are saying .
I hope there is not some personality giving you trouble! We
could call Carl........
Is it too much work to do all you do? Is there a way we can
help more?

No, no problems here. Things are great from my end. Only two more months to go . Just sharing some info as this is quite an unfortunate event. It certainly makes me wonder what our club is about, or should be about.

What I like is the diversity that we all share and embrace. Meaning, Suzy loves her sea horses, Adam loves his GSP and green stuff, Mark loves to get rock & sand & GSLBS & emergency reef doctor, and all the others who contribute to the knowledge bank we call the WMAS. We make the club what it is and the presidency has done a terrific job of keeping meetings focused on varied topics and repeat events that everyone enjoys (BBQ, Frag Fest, Reef Tour, etc). Also the way different members are willing to help each other out. Also I appreciate the support from the different LFSs. Fish 4U is one that I like to go to and they support us very well with discounts, and they are not the only ones that do this too. It is great to belong to such a great club.

Well I guess I'll chime in ( it's my personality)
I have been the cheep frag guy. Sure SO WHAT ADAM But I also paid for my membership before I attended very many meetings. This place was recommended to me from a friend. It was described as a place that was very helpfull and understanding to newbies. I paid for the knowledge I gained and will still gain. If nothing else membership is worth that. I think it is a very reasonable amount of money also.
I attend the cheep stuff auctions at the local FW society. they have meetings maybe every 4-6 months. They seem very closed minded and set in there ways, Have no websight and don't seem to care if they did. They are a bunch of old farts that seem to be richous in the fact they can do it.
But the people here are energetic and outgoing and very personable. sometime too much .
Thanx to the wamas. anything My 1yo saltwater knowledge can do to help let me know.
This club is taking off really fast. What are the plans to keep it on task? I don't want this to go away like vegas.....

People, personalities and politics - it's similar in every organization. This is an awesome club with a lot of diversity and different opinions. It's good that we don't let it get to the core of the club which is fun reefing.
It's too bad that Las Vegas guy got hurt. It's bound to happen to each of us though. I think this club is stronger than that because of the leadership and the desire from all of us for it to succeed.
It's also a pat on our back. It indicates to me that we are good at forgiving even when we have been hurt. I love you guys .

Although I pretty much agree with you, they do have a web site http://fancyguppy.50megs.com/custom2.html and have a meeting every month (in the same building we have our meetings in).

And on LVMAS's web site, www.lvmas.org, you can't miss Howard's name up at the top left hand side (part of the flash show). And there's even a link to his personal site from the main LVMAS page.
I don't know Howard, but I think I can see why there might be some personality conflicts at play
I hope one of the splinter groups succeed in LV. To me hobbyist clubs are about education. An educated aquarist is good for both the Great Barrier Reef and the LFS owner.

let me answer this as a person whos been here a week, and has been in many other societies and clubs. All a club is a group of people who enjoy the same thing. some dont even ahve meetings so the fact that you're able to organize meetings frequently is something i admire. I have also seen that most people who are on this board/in club are very nice and seems to be ready to help people irregardless. I mean, I am not even sure if im going to be able to keep the tanks and i've had a lot of people offer help and advise to me--rather then feeling like why bother when there is no certainity with my tanks. in summary I have learned alot and have been greeted by great people--thats what a club is about :)

WMAS means to me that in an emergency I know 100+ people who
will give me advice and hopefully get me through the problem. WMAS means to me
that once a month I can go to a structured (I know some may debate this)
learning environment where I can learn something about a hobby I value greatly.
WMAS means to me that if my tank ever cracks I know several people will come
take my livestock while I twitch in the corner, and then return the livestock
when the time is right. WMAS means to me that I have a large group of friends
who will enter into dialogue/debate regarding almost any subject regarding
SW/Reef tanks (and even other subjects), learning from other's experiences and
knowledge. WMAS means to me that many people are looking out for each other,
making sure you know that you don't always have to buy the most expensive item,
that Rubbermaid works too. It is a community in the best sense of the word, and
in our current world where most people don't have a sense of community, this
group fills a void that is much needed.
I have learned a great deal from the members of this club. I have always felt
welcome, even the very first meeting. Where else do people post invites for
rock & sand expeditions and end up with a group of 10+ driving out to the
West desert for the rest of the day?
Some of us are better than others at volunteering; some of us don't know what
needs to be done. I would like to help out but I'm not sure what needs to be
done and when. If we are need of volunteers we may want to look at posting what
we need and see if people will fill in the gaps.
I know it is a sore subject for some; that some people think of the club as a
place to get cheap frags. The frag meetings bring in people who normally may
never show up to a meeting. If one out of ten people that show up for that
meeting continue to show up and in the end help another person with some issue
I would think that could be considered a success.

This club has so much to offer for the passion of reefkeeping. The information gathered thru trial and error and of course research is passed along from it's members. We become reef addicts inspired by Reefs of the month like (Bugzme) a totally awesome tank in such a short time. I'm sure lot's of us started breeding guppies etc....and dreamed of having a reef like those saltwater aquariums in Fla. Well the hobby is within reach for all of us with the help of our friends at the club and Home Depot. Diy demos and friends make it happen for many of us. We sit there looking in the window of our complex reef systems maintained in harmony like a mini envoirnment. We are fascinated by what we created with the help of the club. I am impressed with the knowledge we gain from each meeting and truthfully can't wait for the next one. My guppy days are over and I'm hooked on reefing like all of us reading this post. I would like to thank Buzme and Jake for contributing frags last night to my dream of being a reefkeeper and sharing there passion for the hobby. I will in the future share the wealth of my reef to others with the passion. P.S. Mark I will have the money to become an official member next month.
