I am really new at this. I have a Biocube29 and just ordered and received an InTank Media Basket and a Tunze 9002 Skimmer. Oh my Gosh I have no idea what the skimmer should sound like and how quickly I should start seeing foam. I had to add a lot of water and the water is now way above the "max" water line on the side of the tank for those of you who are familiar with biocube 29s. I'm not sure if I now have a little too much water or still not quite enough water. I don't know how much to open the air screw either. No bubbles are happening right now. However, I have had my tank for 6 weeks. I purchased cured lived rock. I have been doing two 1-gallon water changes per week. I have been testing my water all the time and levels are really good. I purchased 2 clown fish two weeks ago. Have snails and hermit crabs for cleanup crew so far. Have also purchased 3 small soft corals. Is it possible that my water is so clean I'm not going to see any bubbles. I think I had the air screw open too much because it was making so much noise and still no bubbles so I have turned it down. Is this just a waiting game for a few days to see foam start collecting? Sorry ... I have read and read as much as I can, but it is really hard to know how much noise I should be hearing and whether my water level is just right. Anyone have any advice here?
I had my skimmer in the 1st chamber of my biocube. I had to move the filter and it was still a tight fit. With it in that chamber though you can have your water level where it is supposed to be. I did have a different brand and am not positive that the tunze wil fit where I had mine.
My skimmer fits into the first chamber of my biocube so I don't really worry about water levels there. The 2nd and third both fluctuate so I try to keep it 3/4 full which requires some top offs every few days.
I thought I would give an update. I've been reading several other boards with discussions about the skimmer I purchased. People seem to love it or hate it. Also, a lot of people had similar problems and it turned out that their skimmer was defective and they needed to get a replacement part. I HATE buying defective equipment, especially if the manufacturer knows they have a defect problem. So now I'm wondering if I even need a skimmer at this point. I am doing my water changes twice a week (just 1 gallon each time). I have quite a good clean up crew. Just 2 fish. I will buy only 1-3 more fish over time. 35 pounds of live rock. I am gradually adding soft corals. I purchased a media basked and have floss, purigen and chemi pure in it. I am faithfully changing my floss ever few days -- afterall its so cheap why not! My LFS tells me I may not even need a skimmer. I've had such bad luck trying to get this skimmer to work that now I don't know what I want to do. Do any of you run these small tanks without skimmers, provided you don't have a lot of fish?
