The ocean is right around 2.3 meq/l (6.4 dKH). Most people with sps keep an elevated alkalinity somewhere in the 2.5 - 4 meq/l range (7 - 11 dKH).

Jon, What do you keep your alk. and calcium at? Also is it true that when alk. goes up ph follows?

I target 3.0 meq/l for my alk. Calcium at 400 ppm. It's generally true that the higher the alk the higher the pH, but tank circulation and ambient CO2 levels also play a major role in pH. A higher alk will also buffer the water more against pH swings.
