The ocean is right around 2.3 meq/l (6.4 dKH).  Most people with sps keep an elevated alkalinity somewhere in the 2.5 - 4 meq/l range (7 - 11 dKH).

I target 3.0 meq/l for my alk.  Calcium at 400 ppm.  It's generally true that the higher the alk the higher the pH, but tank circulation and ambient CO2 levels also play a major role in pH.  A higher alk will also buffer the water more against pH swings.

Jon, what's a "niggle"?

Verb: niggle  nigul

  1. Worry unnecessarily or excessively
    - fuss , fret

  2. Argue over petty things
    - quibble , pettifog , bicker , squabble , brabble

The English are strange... but they do make me laugh loud enough to wake the kids
