Topic: GARLIC OIL Posted: September 04 2010 at 6:29pm |

I have used garlic oil for years and I would like to know what it does? I believe it is used to increase the appetite of the fish so they are healthier and can fight off things like ich and parasites. Is this true or does it help the immune system of our fish? I would really like to know what it supposedly does. I'll use it forever because I always have!

You answered your own question. I'm curious how often you add Garlic Oil and how much is added to what food? To find out if it is working, just stop using it and see what happens. Actually, nothing may happen. Nothing, that is, until you add a fish or move the rock around again. Then you might see some stress followed by the return of Ich. Simply use a Garlic Oil for 5 days or so and the Ich should go away. I use Garlic Oil only once every 3 weeks as a preventive, until a new fish is added. Then it's back to 1xday for 5 days

If you are going to post this, I guess it means you want some help, right? So please tell us: 1. how often 2. how much 3. and on what food. 4. Also tell us what kind of Tang 5. how long you have had it 6. how long it has had Ich 7. and what Garlic Oils you have tried Sorry, that's a lot of questions, but it's the only way we can give useful help. (If my help is not what you are looking for, just tell me to go jump in a lake. )

Those are all valid questions Mark. I use Garlic extreme from Kent. I believe it helps build up their immune system , but also puts out a strong odor which helps knock the ich off of their skin. I only use it when I add a new fish, and I think it needs a little help to fight of the stress.

If I understand correctly, all the fish have been receiving Garlic Oil on their food 3xday for 5 days and the Naso Tang still has Ich?
How much Garlic Oil is added to each feeding.(how many drops?)
Is this Garlic Oil the "Oderless" kind or the stinky kind?
Have you tried any other type of Garlic Oil?

1000 mg = 1 gram of oil being given with each feeding Is that what you are saying? If that's right, way too much oil is going into the tank every day. My best finding is that if the Ich has not been affected by the second day that another type of Garlic Oil should be tried. Also, it's enough to add 1-2 drops of Garlic Oil per cube of frozen once per day marinated without water in the algae rich frozen food. It might be good to go re-read the thread. http://www.utahreefs.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=34014

You can probably gain a lot of benefit by reading that thread about how to use Garlic Oil.
