So I went to turn off the light in my nano and found these guys all over the tank.  I counted at least 38 of them all over my 24 gallon nano.  Should I worry about them taking over or be happy that they are there to keep the tank clean?  They range from 1/8" to 1/2" in length and cover every rock and wall of glass.
Anyone want to buy a slug?  Wink

that is awesome. I use to have the same 'problem'. I actually found that they were the best grazing snails I ever had in my tank because they could fit inside the overflow slits and would go in there and clean inside of it where most snails have to thick of a shell to do that. sadly I bought a pepermint shrimp and a cleaner shrimp that ate them like they were popcorn. Since they only come out at night, and they are algae grazers, I personally don't think you can have too many of them. When they 'bloomed' in my 120 I counted 75 one night before I lost track of where I was counting.

If they bother you... throw in a shrimp for a couple of days and their population should decrease dramatically.

Sweet.  I figured they were a good thing, but better to double check.
I just put a coral banded and peppermint shrimp in last week, should I "save" the stomatellas from them or just let them be?
Mike, I could bring you one or two to the meeting if you want.
(but only if you vote for me Wink  jk)

Speaking like a true reef geek there Dale.  I am proud of yaBig%20smile.

I have two cleaner shrimps, two fire shrimps and still have a ton of them in my tank.  They look a bit freaky but are great grazers.

I guess I'll just have to do a nightly count to make sure they aren't being eaten up.

I would be happy to have a couple more. From what I have read they will "reproduce well in aquaria lacking hermit crabs and shrimp predators."

My cleaner shrimp eats them like popcorn.  The only ones I have are in the sump and the ones that manage to evade the cleaner shrimp!

Recently I started noticing these in my display (I'm guessing hitchhikers off of a frag from someone elses tank?)

I would say I 've seen maybe 10 - 15 so far; most are small (>1/4") but 1 is almost 1 inch long. Also noticed what looks like babies on the glass (40 or 50 little "dots")...

Only thing different in my case vs. what is posted here is that the ones in my tank are out on the glass during the day, not just at night.

Are stomatellas purely nocturnal?

Oh, and my hermits (mostly small blue legs) don't seem to bother these snails

No they are not strictly nocturnal.

Oddly enough I recently noticed about 50-60 in my reef at work.  I don't haven't seen any in 3 years and suddenly I saw patches of them on the glass near the sand.  Very Cool!

It's nice to finally know what those are!  I guess I could have googled them :)  I have a bunch of these guys and love them!  They are one of the first things I "found" in my tank and I've watched them grow big!  One of them is a little over an inch now and is one of the few things with coraline growing on it, hehe.  One interesting thing I thought I would share is, when I went to go move some from my nano to my new tank I found out that.... when you try to pull these guys off the glass you have to be super careful because they will break in half!  It reminded me of a lizard.  95% sure the top half kept alive!

I found this after I posted:

".....The rear portion of their foot can break off, much like some lizards' tails, when they are threatened by a predator. The detached portion then writhes, and twists and otherwise distracts the predator while the snail, presumably, makes good its escape."

These ocean creatures are so awesome!

When they crawl on the glass you can see the point where it would break off it you look for it.

Awww now I feel bad.  I guess after seeing the guys at the fish store yank the turbos / astrea snails off the glass I thought I could do the same with the stomatellas *excuse*  Okay, I learned my lesson and I felt horrible when it happend, but it's good to know they are supposed to do that!

If anyone has a lot of the Stomatella snails and is willing to catch some I am willing to trade a frag of something for it. I am in Utah County so the closer the easier it will be to do it. I loved those snails when I had them. They reproduce well and take care of algea well. Eventually they all died out.

I'll trade a couple for a frag.  What do you have?  I am bringing a couple to the meeting for Mike.  Are you going to be there?
