I am setting up lighting for a 2' deep, 3' wide, 3' high reef aquarium.  I have been told that I should use two 175W metal halide and 2 VHO.  Is this the best way to go?  Or should I try something else?  Where would you suggest getting the parts (probably a retrofit kit)?

I don't believe you can ever have too much lighting.  And 3 feet deep is deep.  Very deep.

Having 3 feet wide makes it tough, since so many lighting fixtures are made for 4 foot tanks.  But compact retrofit kits can be cut in half (that is what I did with mine) to turn 4' fixtures into 2' fixtures.  That is an odd sized tank and difficult to light.  I'm not sure what to recommend, maybe someone else has better ideas.  I personally think you need a ton of light on 3 feet.

I have a 3' wide tank, and have not had any problems finding good lighting.  I agree with Adam in that 3' deep is pretty deep for the lights, but it is also pretty easily remedied with an increase in wattage from your lights.

Lighting is largely a personal choice, and depends on what kind of reef you have in mind.  If you want to house SPS, and maybe some soft, I would recommend that you go with at least 2 retrofitted 250 watt metal halide and 3 - 36" VHO.  If you have the money, I would even go with 2 400 watt metal halides.  The reason that you would use MH is that it produces a white light spectrum far better than other configurations, and VHO produces the best actinic spectrum. - I would use only actinic bulbs in the VHO end.

In my tank at home, I have 3 - 36" VHO bulbs and am in the process of upgrading my lighting to include the 2X250 MH.

Here are a few places I have found that offer these systems with pretty good prices:

www.championlighting.com

www.premiumaquatics.com

www.marinedepot.com

www.hellolights.com

www.oceanencounter.com

Lighting systems can be purchaced much cheaper online than in any local store - by far.  If you are looking for cheaper ways to setup (ie., DIY) you can save even more money.

Hope that helps - Jared.

I wouldn't recommend going less than two 175 watt halides.  Especially with that depth.  You may want to considers 250 watts.
