Hi there,
I'm looking to buy an RO unit. I live in Sandy and I heard that the water here doesn't really require any sort of DI unit, so I'm going with the RO only. Anyway, what does everyone like for their RO stuff? And most importantly, why do you like that unit? I have a 46 bow that I am just getting started. No inhabitants as of yet.

Brandon, Welcome to WMAS. I got my RO unit at Marine Aquatics in Sandy and have been very happy with it. What do I like best about it? Marine Aquatics customer service and the clear canisters so I can do a visual inspection of the membranes.

Brandon, take a look at the ones on ebay. You can buy a very nice 5-stage RO/DI unit for under $100. I have only seen positive feedback from those who bought from there. I have one from AquaSafe (ebay seller) that works very well.

I bought mine from an ebay seller as well and we've been very pleased with it. You can get them for a fraction of the price.

just a curious question..., because I go back and forth w/ ro/di and tap (farmington) just depending on how much free time I have, but if all of them seem to be the same (mainly asking because I have been planning on getting one, and have procrastinated because of all the price differences)...., maybe some horor stories will help my my procrastination because I havent had any problems.... knock on wood ...., let me know what terrible things Ive been doing....,
P.S. People might be mad but I havent been using deClorinaTor either

Brandon, I just had another thought. You can bring your own containers to Marine Aquatics in Sandy and get RO water for free.

Thanks for the info everyone. I'm not a plumbing expert by any means, so where do you usually hook up an RO unit? I've seen some in laundry rooms, but I'm sure there are other locations, right? Where do you run the lines? How feasable is it to use the unit for drinking water? Is this a huge, complex project?

You need a supply of fresh cold water and you need a drain to dump the waste water from the RO. You can locate the actual RO unit anywhere as long as you run tubing. But most people locate their ROs near both a water supply and drain, such as under a sink, in the washroom or near the water heater.

Mine is under the kitchen sink with a separate little faucet for RO drinking water. Some people even hook them up to their ice makers. My tank is in the dining room so I just run a line from under the sink through the wall to to float valve in the sump. It works great and is all hidden.

I second the ebay RO they are cheap and work well. They hook under any sink, but you can buy simple additions to hook them up to a hose like the laundry machine for about 6 bucks. all you need is cold water and a drain. The laundry room would be easier as you can just put the drain down the laundry drain. Hooking them up is simple and instructions are included.

I agree that there are some great deals on ebay for RO units. I
had a hard time justifying the $200, 300 and up prices of the RO units
sold for aquariums. Then when I saw the ones on ebay (mine is
also from aquasafe), I was sold. I got mine for $100. It is
100gpd RO+ and also came with the tank, which is great when you need a
a few gallons quickly. I tested the tap water with a TDS and get
somewhere around 300 ppm, and with the RO I get about 2 ppm. We
use it for the fish tanks, and for drinking water. It is great.

Thanks for the info everyone. Has anyone had success with the Dvoneb Aqua system off of ebay? It's a 6-stage and looks like a good unit, but I'm not sure about the company. It's 100 GPD for about $100. Anyone used it before?

A super easy location to plumb your RO is in the laundry room. Just place a splitter on the cold faucet for the washing machine. You can run the RO drain down the same drain as the washing machine. No plumbing required!
